For used Vauxhall Grandland X cars, choose Arnold Clark

Rugged, stylish and with a dominant on-road presence, the Vauxhall Grandland X was launched in 2017 at the Frankfurt Motor Show as Vauxhall’s third and largest SUV to date. Prioritising space and comfort, the Grandland X is perfect for adventurous families, accommodating five people with ease and offering multiple seating and storage configurations.

Vauxhall Grandland X updates and facelifts

Launched much later than rivals such as the Nissan Qashqai, Peugeot 3008 and ŠKODA Karoq, the Grandland X was Vauxhall’s way of putting an affordable, family-friendly stamp on the crossover trend. It comes with multiple economic engine options including petrol, diesel and hybrid powertrains, and is available in numerous trims.

In 2021, the model received a facelift, at which point the ‘X’ was dropped from its name. As such, post-2021 vehicles are simply named ‘Grandland’. The facelift brought exterior styling updates to create a sharper design, as well as improved interior tech. These newer models benefit from the marque’s simplified range structure too, with the revised trim levels now consisting of Design, GS Line and range-topping Ultimate options only.

Despite its placement within an extremely competitive market, there’s plenty to admire about the Grandland X. It’s a notch bigger than its sibling the Crossland X, is exceptionally comfortable to drive, has a decent amount of kit including advanced technology and safety features and is undeniably good looking out on the road.

Practicality and style of the car

The Grandland X is notoriously practical. This is because the cabin is spacious, with plenty of head and legroom for all. A six-foot adult can sit behind a driver of a similar height and still not feel cramped. The Grandland X offers more interior space than competitors such as the Nissan Qashqai. A child’s seat can also be fitted to the rear bench thanks to ISOFIX anchor points, and on the post-2021 version there’s an ISOFIX anchor point on the front passenger seat too, offering flexibility when it comes to travelling with youngsters.

If you’re heading to the airport or require plenty of storage space for a trip away, the Grandland X offers a 514-litre boot with all the seats up, which is ample for the weekly shop or a light pushchair. This expands to an impressive 1,652 litres with the seats down, perfect for several suitcases, sports equipment or bulky items. If you opt for a hybrid model, the boot provides 380 litres, which is comparable to the luggage capacity of the Peugeot 3008. In the cabin, you’ll find lots of storage cubbies, including a glove box and a space between the front seats that’s perfectly sized for smartphones.

With a towing capacity of between 1,250 and 2,000kg, the Grandland X is an ideal holiday companion, capable of pulling an adequately sized trailer or caravan effortlessly. For maximum towing capacity, opt for the 2.0-litre manual diesel variant, which offers a little more muscle.

Running costs

Thanks to its eco-friendly powertrains, the Vauxhall Grandland X is reasonably inexpensive to insure. It doesn’t exceed insurance group 30 out of 50, with some of the lower-powered models sitting comfortably in group 12. Annual road tax for this SUV comes in at £180 per year, and with servicing plans readily available, Grandland X ownership is unlikely to break the bank.

How a used Vauxhall Grandland X drives

The Vauxhall Grandland X has a small engine range which makes things unusually simple from a buyer’s perspective. The petrol engine is the same one used by both Citroën and Peugeot, and is a 1.2-litre, three-cylinder turbo with 128bhp and 230Nm of torque. It can go from 0-62mph in a respectable 10.9 seconds when paired with an automatic gearbox, and returns a combined fuel economy of up to 53.3-54.3mpg.

The diesel offering is a 1.5-litre unit producing 128bhp and 300Nm of torque. It’ll do 0-62mph in 11.8 seconds and offers top speeds of 119mph. The newer 1.5-litre unit was introduced in 2018 and is said to be as capable as a 2.0-litre. Fuel consumption for the diesel is: urban 60.1-64.2 mpg, extra-urban 70.6-74.3 mpg and combined 67.3-68.9 mpg.

If you’re looking for an eco-friendly model, the plug-in hybrid alternative comes with a 1.6-litre petrol engine paired with a single electric motor. This delivers 222bhp and 360Nm of torque. Performance is nippy with a 0-62mph time of just 8.6 seconds. Top speeds are 140mph or 84mph in EV mode, with combined fuel economy reaching up to 192-204mpg. Emitting just 31g/km of CO2, it’s also a more sustainable option, and the 34 miles of electric range enable you to complete the daily commute without any impact on the environment. Charging with a 7kW wallbox takes just under two hours.

Features you can expect in a Vauxhall Grandland X

Interior

Step inside the Vauxhall Grandland X and you’ll discover a spacious, well-organised and beautifully crafted cabin that prioritises the comfort of both driver and passengers. While it’s recommended just two adults sit in the back to maximise space, three will fit on the rear bench with no issues for shorter driving periods. The Grandland X has plenty of configuration options, with 60:40 split-folding rear seats. This is slightly different from the 40:20:40 configuration options offered by some rivals, but still allows plenty of flexibility when it comes to accommodating passenger and luggage needs.

The cabin itself is solidly built, using quality fabrics and durable materials designed to withstand muddy boots, on-road snacking and more. The high driving position gives a commanding view of the road. A multi-functional steering wheel also makes it simple and safe to operate the infotainment system and the cruise control functions whilst driving.

Technology

Technology is also a highlight, with newer models boasting a dual-screen layout called Pure Panel which modernises the interior. Entry-level Design models come with two 7-inch displays, while higher trims feature a 12-inch digital instrument cluster and a 10-inch touchscreen. Standard equipment also includes Android Auto and Apple CarPlay for seamless smartphone connectivity, with integrated sat nav and a rear-view camera available further up the range.

Safety

As for safety, the Grandland X secured a 5-star NCAP safety rating, achieving an impressive 84% score for adult occupant protection. A child occupant protection score of 87% matches that of premium vehicles such as the Audi A4. The Grandland X offers a wide range of driver-assistance and safety systems including a Fatigue Warning system, which monitors driver behaviour and prompts you to take a break when it detects signs of fatigue. Lane Keeping Assist, Autonomous Emergency Braking, Traction Control and Stability Control all feature as standard.

The plug-in hybrid variant has been purposefully designed to keep emissions to a minimum and it glides over bumps in the road. On the motorway, wind and road noise are adequately suppressed. Steering is precise and although there’s some body roll through corners, that’s to be expected for a vehicle of its size.

Plug-in hybrid Grandland X models come with Vauxhall Connect, a subscription-based service that delivers live traffic updates and road safety alerts.

Trims available on the Vauxhall Grandland X

The naming system of Grandland X trims has changed over the years. Models from 2018 to 2021 come in SE, Design Line, Tech Line Nav, Sport Nav and Ultimate trims. Thereafter the range was slimmed down to three main trims: Design, GS Line and Ultimate.

Vauxhall Grandland X Design

You’ll get plenty for your money at entry-level, with Design models having a high level of kit. Exterior features include 17-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights and automatic wipers, while inside there’s a 7-inch colour touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone connectivity, as well as electronic climate control and front and rear parking sensors.

Vauxhall Grandland X GS Line

Naturally sporty, the GS Line adds extra panache to the model’s exterior with a black roof, door mirrors and wheel arches, as well as 18-inch gloss black alloy wheels. You’ll get dark tinted rear windows and alloy-effect skid plates, as well as LED headlights, taillights and daytime running lights. The GS Line also gets the new Pure Panel cockpit with twin screens: a 10-inch colour touchscreen and a 12-inch digital instrument cluster, as well as sat nav.

Vauxhall Grandland X Ultimate

Head to the top of the range and get everything the GS Line has to offer as well as 19-inch multi-spoke ‘Ironman’ alloys, IntelliLux LED pixel headlights and a body-coloured front bumper, rear bumper, wheel arches, door claddings and skid plates.
