What is the Audi A4 Black Edition?

The Audi A4 is one of the most consistently popular luxury cars on the market. Across its many iterations, from its launch in 1994 to the present day, it has retained its reputation as a premium car with significant power under the bonnet.

The introduction of the Black Edition came in 2014 and represents a high-end trim option across the A4’s Mk4 and Mk5 iterations. Based on the similar S Line trim, the Black Edition accentuates the sporty elements of the Audi A4 with an updated body kit and the option of the most powerful engine in the range.

While many versions of the Audi A4 are marketed as premium family cars that are optimal for lengthy motorway drives, the power-heavy nature of the Black Edition extends the Audi A4’s appeal to thrill-seekers and petrolheads alike.

Audi A4 Black Edition history

The A4 Mk4, introduced in 2008, was the first of the Audi range to add the ‘Black Edition’ to its trim options. However, this didn’t come until six years after the initial launch of the Mk4, with the trim level added as part of a 2014 facelift for models across Europe. As a premium addition to the A4 lineup, it included the premium 2.0-litre and 3.0-litre Quattro engines, which can accelerate to 60mph in an impressive 6.4 seconds and 5.9 seconds respectively.

The Mk5 also has a wealth of variations both in terms of the A4’s size and spec, and its power options too. The Black Edition is available with engine sizes ranging between 1.4 litres and 3.0 litres, with newer editions also including hybrid options.

At launch, the Black Edition was based on Audi’s S-Line model, which added a series of sporty features to the vehicle, including a revised body kit and sports suspension. The Black Edition also gets these features, plus some other equipment and design changes to help make it more distinct. The Black Edition is most defined by its unique black styling kit, which enhances the stylish looks of the A4. Other features include leather seats, a sports steering wheel and an upgraded sound system.

In 2019, the A4 Mk5 was introduced, with the Black Edition being updated in line with standard models. This update saw several features added including new LED headlights and a larger 10.1-inch touchscreen interface for the infotainment system, both of which were made standard across all models. In early 2023, Audi announced that the next generation of A4s would be marketed as A5s, while any future A4s would be sold as electric vehicles only.

Where does the Audi A4 Black Edition sit in the range?

As one of the premium Audi A4 trim options, the Black Edition is at the top end of the range. Its sporty aesthetic and increased wheel size, paired with a plush interior, and the most powerful engine options, the A4 Black Edition is at the high end of the price range.

Based upon the S Line model, with its sportier design and luxurious cabin, the Black Edition goes a step further with its piano black interior and a wealth of tech upgrades within.

What features and equipment does the A4 Black Edition have?

The Audi A4 Black Edition remains one of the top-level trim options across the Mk4 and Mk5. As such, you can expect premium features both inside the cabin and beneath the bonnet.

The Mk4 boasts the same body kit as its closest A4 trim counterpart, the S-Line, with leather seating throughout and a sporty body kit. However, it adds its own luxurious features that cement its position as a premium option. A flat-bottomed three-spoke steering wheel immediately gives the Black Edition a sporty feel, helped by the hefty engine options that rise to the range-topping 3.0-litre TDI. The sporty look is complemented by 19-inch alloy wheels and stiffer suspension.

The Mk5, which offers hybrid engine options as well as petrol and diesel, includes the premium fittings that you would expect from a range-topping Audi. Standard equipment in the cabin includes heated seats and integrated sat nav as well as a 12.3-inch infotainment system that is compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Audio. The real appeal for those interested in high-quality in-car entertainment is the optional Bang & Olufsen sound system – made up of 19 speakers. Safety-wise, you can expect all the most advanced technological features including camera-based traffic sign recognition, adaptive cruise control, lane and turn assist and parking sensors.
