For used BMW M8 M8 Competition cars, choose Arnold Clark

The high-performance, high-spec BMW M8 Competition is a twin-turbocharged edition of the BMW 8 Series. It borrows the engine prowess of the BMW M5, while adding the style of the BMW 8 Series. Sitting right at the top of BMW’s model range, the BMW M8 Competition is a competitor to similarly powerful and premium models like the Mercedes Benz S-Class Coupé, Lexus LC Coupé and Aston Martin DB11 Coupé.

Testing of the production BMW M8 began in June 2017 and a sneak preview was unveiled to the public the same year. A few months later, in September 2017, BMW revealed a racing version of the model, the M8 GTE, which made its racing debut at the 2018 WeatherTech SportsCar Championship.

Development work on the BMW M8 continued through 2018 with production prototypes being made available to the press for review. The production model was finally made available online in June 2019 in both coupé and convertible styles. The same year, the BMW M8 Competition made its debut as the official safety car of the 2019 MotoGP Austrian Grand Prix.

BMW M8 Competition updates and facelifts

The Mk1 BMW M8 Competition was released onto the market in June 2019. Being developed in tandem with its racing rival means the BMW M8 Competition delivers a high-performance drive, all wrapped up in luxurious packaging. It is available as a two-door convertible, two-door coupé and four-door gran coupé.

The four-door BMW M8 gran coupé was made available in October 2019 to rival models like the Mercedes AMG GT 4-door Coupé, the Porsche Panamera and the Bentley Flying Spur.

The BMW M8 Competition received a mid-life facelift in 2023, coinciding with the 50th anniversary of BMW. This facelift added minor exterior changes, such as the grille inserts, body colour choices, wheel design and interior cabin technology.

Practicality and style of the car

The BMW M8 Competition’s combination of luxury and performance is helped by its large size. In its gran coupé body, it has a length of 5,098mm – 71mm more than Mercedes Benz S-Class Coupé, 328mm longer than the Lexus LC Coupé and 348mm longer than the Aston Martin DB11 Coupée.

This results in a roomy and comfortable ride for those in the front seats with plenty of head, elbow and legroom on offer. The front seats are supportive and comfortable and come with electric adjustment and memory functionality. The driving seat can also be positioned low to suit the drivers preference.

Passengers in the rear of the coupé or convertible will get space and comfort enough to keep two younger passengers happy. The gran coupé is larger and therefore offers more space and comfort for accompanying travellers of any size, with the addition of a third seat for use on shorter journeys.

The BMW M8 Competition also offers very good boot space for its vehicle class and has among the largest rear spaces on offer. Depending on the body of the model, standard boot space ranges from 350 to 440 litres – more than the Mercedes Benz S-Class’s 400 litres, Lexus LC Coupé’s 197 litres and Aston Martin DB11 Coupé’s 270 litres. The boot lid is powered, saving you the bother of opening and closing it yourself.

Running costs

The insurance group of a BMW M8 Competition is 45 or 50, depending on engine size – comparable to the Mercedes-Benz S-Class coupé, Lexus LC coupé and Aston Martin DB11 coupé.

Road tax differs depending on the year and engine you choose. Broadly speaking, you can expect to pay between £180 and £555 annually, which again is comparable to its closest rivals listed above.

How a used BMW M8 Competition drives

The BMW M8 Competition comes with the German manufacturer’s most powerful production engine: a hefty 4.4 litre twin-turbo V8-cylinder petrol revving up to 6,000rpm with outputs of 625bhp and delivering 750Nm of torque. You’ll get from 0-62 in 3.2 seconds with a top speed reaching 155mph. It returns up to 25.4mpg.

This model also comes with M XDrive with Active M Differential, giving you the agility of a rear-wheel drive with the control of an all-wheel drive. The 4-wheel drive (‘4WD’) can be adjusted to 4WD Sport or rear-wheel 2WD mode. The BMW M8 Competition has an 8-speed automatic transmission.

Features you can expect in a BMW M8 Competition

Interior

Luxury is the watchword for the BMW M8 Competition and the model features all the tech you’d expect from a range-topping BMW. This includes the M Performance steering wheel pro with an Alcantra grip, BMW’s OS 8 infotainment system, built-in sat-nav, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity and a bright and clear dash. The central infotainment system sits at 12.3 inches and works as well using touchscreen or the rotary dial. You’ll also find a 12.3-inch digital instrument display which shows your key drive information, including speed, revs, distance driven and fuel level.

The BMW Digital Key can also turn your smartphone into a car key, not only allowing you to open your car with your phone but also enabling you to share the key with five friends and limit the maximum speed for certain drivers.

Technology

The BMW M8 Competition incorporates the BMW xDrive all-wheel drive system to distribute drive power to the rear and front wheels for greater traction, dynamics and safety. Integral active steering offers greater manoeuvrability and agility at lower speeds (37-49mph) by turning the rear wheels opposite the front wheels.

The integrated M brake system delivers a precise pedal feel through two settings (Comfort and Speed) alongside brake activation, brake booster and brake control functions. These M Carbon ceramic brakes deliver even more braking power with minimal wear. They’re also lighter, meaning enhanced agility and acceleration. The M8 Competition also has keyless go, matrix LED headlights, Parking Assist, four-zone climate control and adaptive cruise control.

Safety

The BMW M8 Competition has not been safety tested but comes with a range of safety and drive-assistance features, including a head protection system and head restraints, three-point safety belts, front airbags and seat- and side-mounted airbags. Previous owners may have opted for enhanced safety features including automatic city collision mitigation, adaptive cruise control, cornering brake control, lane keeping assist and lane departure warning. It also comes with three ISOFIX points in the rear outer and front passenger seat.
