What is the BMW X1 M Sport?

The BMW X1 is the German manufacturer’s smallest SUV, providing a compact solution to urban motoring. Its modest dimensions make it ideal for manoeuvring and parking in city streets, while the level of interior space and practicality on offer meet the highest demands. The M Sport is the highest available trim level for the model and brings a sportier feel to your drive thanks to unique styling elements. It is also available with a wider range of engines than the entry-level Sport trim.

As the top-spec variant, the BMW X1 M Sport competes with Mercedes-Benz GLA AMG Line, Volvo XC40 R-Design and the Audi Q3 S Line trims. It’s ideally suited to growing families and drivers living in an urban environment who prefer the aesthetics and ride height of an SUV over those of a hatchback. Those requiring some off-road capability have the option of a four-wheel drive setup, meaning they can tackle challenging conditions with confidence.

BMW X1 M Sport history

The BMW X1 was first launched in 2009 as the smallest option in the brand’s extensive SUV lineup. The first models were offered with either rear or four-wheel drive and the only trim available was the SE. In 2011, this was joined by the M Sport, which had firmer suspension for a sportier ride, as well as dual-zone climate control and rear parking sensors.

The Mk2 edition arrived in UK showrooms in October 2015, this time primarily with a four-wheel drive setup, although one variant was available with front-wheel drive. Initially only SE, Sport and xLine variants were offered, but they were joined by the M Sport trim in November that year. Like its predecessor, the Mk2 BMW X1 M Sport had sporty styling upgrades and sports suspension. Inside was Alcantara trim and an M-Sport Nappa leather steering wheel.

The whole range received a facelift in June 2019, with minor tweaks to the car’s exterior and a revised engine lineup. The M Sport was now available with a 1.5-litre petrol engine and another diesel option. In March 2020, the xDrive25e plug-in hybrid was introduced, giving drivers a greener way to enjoy this compact SUV.

The Mk3 X1 was launched in 2023 and promptly won Auto Express’ Small Premium SUV of the Year award. With more space and hybrid technology across the range, it’s more practical and efficient than ever. The M Sport remains at the peak of the trim lineup and offers no fewer than six engine options. These include a 1.5-litre 170bhp petrol and a 2.0-litre 218bhp petrol, and a 2.0-litre diesel with outputs of 150bhp or 211bhp. The two plug-in hybrids are powered by a 1.5-litre petrol engine and electric motor, with one producing a total of 245bhp and the other delivering 326bhp. These are both the fastest and most efficient choices, accelerating from 0-62mph in 6.8 and 5.6 seconds respectively. An all-electric range of up to 55 miles is available for both.

Where does the BMW X1 M Sport sit in the range?

For all three generations of the BMW X1, the M Sport trim sits at the top of the range. On the Mk2, the M Sport (2015 to 2022) is placed above the SE, Sport and xLine variants. The Mk3 model (2023 onwards) dropped the SE trim, so only the Sport and xLine sit below the M Sport.

What features and equipment does the BMW X1 M Sport have?

Choose the Mk3 BMW X1 M Sport and you’ll get 19-inch alloy wheels, larger air intakes, an aluminium grille and black roof rails. The interior is adorned with dark aluminium trim and there are either Alcantara leather or Sensatec faux leather seats with contrasting blue stitching. There’s also an M Sport steering wheel, dual-zone climate control and ambient lighting.

Practicality has been prioritised with ample space available for five. The rear seats slide and recline for your passengers’ comfort. The 540-litre boot is accessed by an electrically powered tailgate, which provides contactless opening and closing for maximum convenience. There’s plenty of driver assistance too, including cruise control, lane departure warning and a parking assistant system with rear view camera and sensors.

A twin-screen infotainment setup includes a 10.25-inch instrument cluster and a customisable 10.7-inch touchscreen display. Functions such as the DAB radio, telephony and heated seats can be operated by saying, “Hey BMW” followed by your command. This system learns your accent and mannerisms over time, enabling it to become more accurate.
