What is the Mercedes-Benz GLA AMG Line?

The Mercedes-Benz GLA is a compact crossover with plenty of kerb appeal. Offering energetic performance, an array of equipment as standard, and a smooth, comfortable driving experience, it’s the perfect choice for young families looking for a touch of luxury. It’s also a competent urban vehicle, with its modest dimensions making it easy to park and manoeuvre. For those travelling longer distances to meet clients or manage a business, it provides an attractive all-round package.

The GLA was awarded Auto Express’ Small Premium SUV of the Year in 2020, 2021 and 2022. Its AMG Line variant is particularly enticing, offering a sportier feel and premium interior touches. Alongside AMG exterior styling elements, you’ll find lowered suspension for a more dynamic drive and Artico faux leather upholstery. This trim is designed to offer the exclusive feel of an AMG car, but without the running costs that come with some of the high-performance engines.

With its stylish exterior and premium driving experience, the GLA AMG Line offers stiff competition for the Volvo XC40 R-Design, Audi Q3 S Line, the BMW X1 M Sport and the Range Rover Evoque HSE Dynamic.

Mercedes-Benz GLA AMG Line history

The Mercedes-Benz GLA first launched in 2014, having been unveiled as a concept at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show. The smallest of the German brand’s SUVs, it was designed to combine the compact practicality of a hatchback with the high driving position and premium comfort of an SUV. Based on the A-Class platform, it came with a range of petrol and diesel engine options and a choice of manual or automatic transmission and two- or four-wheel drive.

Two trims were available on the Mk1 model, of which the AMG Line was the higher. Choosing this variant meant enjoying the sporty aesthetics of the GLA 45 AMG, such as an AMG front bumper with titanium grey accents, 18-inch AMG alloy wheels, aluminium interior trim and sports seats upholstered in Artico and Dinamica with red stitching. For enhanced performance, the AMG Line also featured lowered sports suspension and a Dynamic Handling package.

As an AMG-inspired variant, it pays homage to the racing heritage of the sub-brand, which was founded in 1967 by Hans Werner Aufrecht and Erhard Melcher. Their surnames provide the ‘A’ and ‘M’ of the acronym, with Aufrecht’s birthplace, Grossaspach, providing the ‘G’.

In the summer of 2020, the Mk2 Mercedes-Benz GLA was launched. Again, the AMG Line formed a key part of the trim structure and was available with four engine options. Alongside a 1.3-litre 163bhp petrol were 2.0-litre diesels with outputs of 150bhp and 190bhp. There was also a petrol/electric plug-in hybrid producing 218bhp. The fastest was the 190bhp diesel, which could reach 62mph from a standstill in 7.5 seconds. The most efficient was the PHEV with its all-electric range of up to 48 miles.

Where does the Mercedes-Benz GLA AMG Line sit in the range?

The AMG Line trim sits at the top of the lineup for the Mk1 GLA (2014 – 2020). With the Mk2 model (2020 onwards), the AMG Line remained a staple of the range, but now came in several variants. The second-tier trim was named AMG Line Executive, with AMG Line Premium and AMG Line Premium Plus sitting above it. All retained the AMG sports styling, but offer increasing levels of equipment as you move up the range.

What features and equipment does the Mercedes-Benz GLA AMG Line have?

The Mk1 GLA AMG Line (2014 – 2020) has a 481-litre boot capacity and plenty of space for five occupants. The Mk2 edition (2020 onwards) offers between 445 litres and 495 litres of boot space, depending on your chosen powertrain. The Mk2’s AMG Line Executive model features 19-inch AMG alloy wheels, privacy glass, a bespoke radiator grille and AMG body styling. Inside are AMG sports pedals and a Nappa leather sports steering wheel. There’s also dual-zone climate control for your comfort.

Ambient lighting in 64 colours enables you to set the mood for your journey, and two 10.25-inch displays make up the customisable instrument cluster and infotainment screen. The infotainment system can be operated via the display, some pads on the steering wheel, or with the ‘Hey Mercedes’ voice assistant. It supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and comes with DAB radio, navigation and a reversing camera.

The AMG Line Executive trim also comes with multiple airbags, lane keeping assist, driver attention assist and automatic emergency braking for your safety.
