What is the Ford Focus ST-3?

A used Ford Focus ST-3 offers drivers performance and practicality behind the wheel. The hot hatch has a large boot and a spacious cabin , making it great for families. With a well-built and designed interior, the Focus ST-3 comes with a range of premium features that make for an enjoyable and comfortable driving experience. The Focus ST-3 is available in hatchback or estate body types.

The Ford Focus ST-3 rivals other hot hatches such as the Škoda Octavia vRS, Volkswagen Golf GTI, Cupra Leon VZ2 and the Hyundai i30 N. Standing for ‘Sports Technologies’, the Focus ST-3 was the inspiration for the ST-Line trim levels available on other Ford models.

Ford Focus ST-3 history

First shown at the 2010 Paris Auto Show, the Ford Focus ST-3 was launched in 2012. Ford adapted the design of the popular Ford Focus giving the ST a wide front grille and sporty appearance.

At launch, the ST-3 was one of three trims and was the flagship trim available for the Focus ST, offering owners some premium features. Depending on the engine, the Mk1 Focus ST-3 had a top speed of 154mph and achieved 0 to 62mph in 6.5 seconds.

The Mk2 Ford Focus ST-3 was launched in 2014. Some subtle changes were made to the exterior such as an updated front and rear bumper design. On the inside, the cabin is larger, increasing the comfort of the car as rear passengers now had more room. An infotainment system is mounted on the dashboard and a sporty flat-bottomed steering wheel and sports seats are installed into the front. This was offered with either a petrol or diesel engine. Depending on the engine, it has a top speed of 154mph, achieving 0 to 62mph in 6.5 seconds, like its predecessor.

In 2015, Ford reduced the trim range on the Ford Focus ST, discontinuing the ST-1 and reassigning the ST-2 as the entry-level trim. The Ford Focus ST-3 remained the flagship trim for the Focus ST lineup.

Ford launched the Mk3 in 2019, with new technology integrated into the Focus ST-3 that was borrowed from race and rally cars. This included the anti-lag system for rapid delivery of engine boost on demand and a new 2.3-litre petrol engine. With a top speed of 155mph, the Mk3 Ford Focus ST-3 achieves 0 to 62mph in 5.5 seconds. In the interior of the Focus ST-3, Ford installed a new infotainment system which supported Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

By 2021, the Ford Focus ST-3 was cherished by Ford as a performance model that held its own against rivals. The Mk4 improved the Ford Focus ST-3 and allowed Ford to safeguard the model for the future by dropping the diesel engine and offering the petrol engine with either manual or automatic transmissions. Inside, a larger 13.2-inch infotainment screen replaced the previous eight-inch version, and some design changes were made to the instrument cluster as analogue dials were replaced with a TFT screen. This kept the ST-3 up to date with the demands from modern drivers.

The Mk4 ST-3 has a top speed of 155mph and achieves 0 to 62mph in 5.7 seconds.
