Grey Kia Sorento from the front

The largest SUV in the Kia range, the Sorento strikes a balance between affordable practicality and premium comfort. The Mk1 arrived in the UK in 2002. Now in its fourth generation, it has become a frontrunner in the family SUV market, rivalling models such as the Nissan X-Trail and Land Rover Discovery Sport.

Kia Sorento updates and facelifts

The Mk2 Sorento debuted in 2010, with the Mk3 arriving in 2014. The third generation offers customers a choice of five or seven seats as well as an impressive level of equipment. The current iteration, the Mk4, was launched in 2020 and brought more engine options to the table, adding full hybrid and plug-in hybrid variants to the existing diesel line-up.

The Sorento’s muscular styling and generous dimensions give it an imposing presence out on the road. A sweeping roofline and crisp contours give the model a sporty feel, while high ground clearance and roof rails demonstrate its adventurous nature.

Trim levels for vehicles produced between 2020 and July 2022 include the 2, 3 and 4, with each boasting a more comprehensive level of kit. Thereafter, Kia slimmed down its options to a single trim: the ‘Edition’, which is based on the 4 trim.

Practicality and style of the car

Whether you’re searching for a spacious vehicle to accommodate your growing family, a reliable option for fleet use, or something with impressive towing capabilities, a used Kia Sorento ranks highly.

Available in five and seven-seat options, it’s an ideal solution for large families, and can comfortably seat three adults in the second row thanks to sliding seats that enable passengers to maximise their legroom. The third row is better suited to younger children, and can be folded flat to create more luggage space.

In the Mk4, folding the third row seats provides 604-litres of boot space in the PHEV, 608-litres in the full hybrid and 616-litres in the diesel. Flip the second row of seats down as well and you’ll have between 1,988 and 2,011-litres of luggage capacity – that’s more than the SEAT Tarraco and Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace, which offer 1,775 litres and 1,920 litres respectively.

If you’re towing a trailer, horsebox or caravan, you’ll find the Sorento up to the task. The automatic can pull a braked trailer of up to 2,000kg, while the manual variant is even tougher, with a towing capacity of 2,500kg.

Running costs

The Kia Sorento Mk3 occupies insurance groups 24-28 (out of 50), making it an affordable option in terms of running costs. The KX-1 trim offers the best value, with higher trims such as the KX-3 and KX-4 sitting in the higher insurance groups.

Choose a Mk4 variant and you’re looking at a slightly higher premium between groups 31 and 34. Annual road tax for Mk4 Sorento vehicles registered from April 2017 is £560. This applies to the first five years after the vehicle is first taxed, after which it drops to the standard rate of £180 for the diesel models and £170 for hybrid options.

How a used Kia Sorrento drives

Despite its size, the Kia Sorento delivers a pacey, controlled ride. It keeps its composure through corners and on twisty lanes, while the four-wheel drive – available on every Mk3 and Mk4 variant – provides stability and genuine off-road capability.

All Mk3 Sorentos are equipped with a 2.2-litre diesel engine that produces 197bhp and is matched to either manual or automatic transmission. This delivers a 0-62mph time of 8.7 or 9.1 seconds respectively, and a combined fuel economy of up to 49.6mpg.

The Mk4 kept the 2.2-litre diesel option, which comes with an eight-speed dual-clutch gearbox and produces 190bhp and 440Nm of torque. The full hybrid combines a 1.6-litre T-GDi turbocharged petrol engine with an output of 167bhp, and a 59bhp electric motor powered by a 1.49kWh battery, to produce a combined 226bhp and 350Nm of torque. This takes you from 0-62mph in just nine seconds and delivers a combined fuel economy of up to 40.9mpg.

Opt for the plug-in hybrid (PHEV) and the 1.6-litre petrol engine is paired with a more powerful 13.8kWh battery, which boosts the electric motor to 90bhp. Combined, they produce 261bhp and 350Nm of torque, resulting in a 0-62mph time of just 8.4 seconds and a top speed of 119mph. Emissions reach as low as 38g/km and combined fuel economy reaches 176.6mpg. With a 35-mile electric-only range, you can complete the school run or get around town emission-free.

Features you can expect in a Kia Sorento

Interior

Grey Kia Sorento interior rear seats

Premium comfort and modern technology are combined in a Kia Sorento. Variants with five seats can accommodate five adults thanks to the vehicle’s ample head and legroom. Choose a seven-seat edition and a third row of seats is added, which can seat a couple of children or be folded flat to create more boot space.

The cabin combines quality with functionality, with smart finishes and an intuitive design that immediately make you feel at home. A rotary dial in the centre console replaces the gearstick, and physical buttons ensure operating the infotainment system is easy. There’s plenty of storage space too, with cup holders and cubbies providing room for all your devices and trinkets. It’s also worth noting that all third and fourth-generation Sorentos come with roof rails, providing extra luggage capacity whenever you need it.

Technology

Up front, you’ll find everything you need for a relaxing, intuitive drive even in entry-level trims. Depending on the trim you choose, there’s a 7 or 8-inch touchscreen that provides access to infotainment options, and all Mk3 and Mk4 cars feature Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, enabling you to use smartphone apps on the go. Higher up the range, you’ll enjoy comfort and convenience features such as a panoramic sunroof, powered leather seats and a greater variety of driver-assistance functions. A used Kia Sorento will make reaching your destination simple, with most trims offering sat nav. Plus, with features such as cruise control as standard, long motorway drives are a breeze.

Opt for a 2022-23 ‘Edition’ trim and you’ll find it laden with kit, from 19-inch black alloy wheels and a power tailgate to a 10.25-inch touchscreen with a 360-degree camera and Bose audio system. It also offers UVO Connect telematic services, which provide live information on traffic, parking and weather conditions. Couple that with the smartphone app and you can send routes to your car in advance of your journey.

Safety

The Kia Sorento was awarded a full five-star Euro NCAP safety rating in both the 2014 and 2020 tests, and its outstanding value can be partly attributed to its comprehensive safety equipment.

The 2020 model received impressive adult and child occupant protection scores of 82% and 85% respectively, thanks to active systems such as Forward Collision Avoidance Assist (FCA), which scan the road for other vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists, thereby helping to prevent collisions.

Lane Assist and Speed Assistance systems also come as standard, while passive features such as front and side airbags and ISOFIX child-seat anchor points help to keep all passengers safe.

Trims available on the Kia Sorento
