Since 1989, the Land Rover Discovery has been a cornerstone of the Land Rover brand. Three successive generations have kept the family SUV in the limelight. While the Discovery Sport shares its name, the model actually replaced the Freelander in 2014, bringing in a new era of Land Rover Discoverys.

Land Rover Discovery Sport updates and facelifts

The Discovery’s visuals have been brought up to date, in keeping with the modern era of the Land Rover family. Sat alongside its Range Rover siblings, the Discovery strikes the same distinguished, luxurious aesthetic while keeping to its Freelander and classic Discovery roots, feeling at home on the road and off the beaten track.

At its heart, the Discovery Sport is still a utilitarian vehicle. It guarantees plenty of boot space for luggage or two seated passengers in the 5+2 seating configuration and high ground clearance that makes nature's trickiest terrain a breeze to drive over.

The Discovery Sport won the Auto Express Compact SUV of the Year award in 2015. An update in 2019 offered improved fuel economy and reduced emissions with its mild hybrid and plug-in hybrid additions to the lineup of engines.

Practicality and style of the car

Land Rover designs cars with practicality in mind.

Many configurations of the Discovery Sport feature a 5+2 seating system, with two seats in the boot that fold flat when not needed. Carrying more passengers is a great help, particularly for growing families. There are ISOFIX child seat mounts in the outer rear seats to strap the little ones in, too.

With the boot seats in place, you'll still have enough space for the weekly shop, with around 115 litres. Put the boot seats down, and the boot capacity skyrockets to 963 litres, climbing further to 1,574 litres if you lower the rear seats as well. That takes it a little beyond the Audi Q5's 1,550 litres.

The Land Rover Discovery Sport has an impressive towing capacity starting at 1,800kg. The higher-torque diesel engines can pull as much as 2,200kg with four-wheel-drive and automatic transmission.

Running costs

The Discovery Sport is within insurance groups 29-40 depending on the generation and trim you choose, putting it squarely in line with rivals like the Audi Q5 (21-42) and Mercedes-Benz GLC (27-47).

Depending on trim and engine choice, the Discovery Sport’s road tax ranges from £180 to £570 per year. The 2.0 D165 Auto five-door, for example, is at the lowest end of the scale, while the SE Tech 2.0 SD4 240hp will set you back the full £570.

How a used Land Rover Discovery Sport drives

The Discovery Sport was released with an older 2.2-litre diesel engine at launch. A year later, the much-improved British-built 2.0-litre Ingenium engine was introduced. With today's trims, there are still plenty of engines to choose from.

The entry-level 2.0-litre front-wheel drive diesel engine comes with a six-speed manual gearbox. It generates 161bhp and reaches 62mph in 10.4 seconds on its way to a cruising speed of 112mph. The D200 engine puts out an impressive 204bhp, meaning you'll reach 62mph in 8.3 seconds.

The 2-litre D200 diesel engine puts out 201bhp, reaches 62mph in 8.3 seconds, and has a top speed of 117mph. The 2.0-litre P250 petrol engine has 247bhp and reaches 62mph in a little over seven seconds. It has a top speed of 140mph. Both are mild hybrids that use the motor to regenerate power during braking and deceleration and give the power back when setting off for an extra kick and greater fuel economy.

The plug-in hybrid has a 1.5-litre three-cylinder engine, delivering power to the front wheels while the electric motor powers the back. The engine alone has 200bhp, increasing to 309bhp when you add the electric motor into the mix, getting you from 0-62mph in just 6.5 seconds.

All but the entry-level engine features a nine-speed automatic transmission.

Features you can expect in a Land Rover Discovery Sport

Interior

Comfort may be considered a luxury, but Land Rover considers it a necessity. From the entry-level SE trim and up, all the seats come with a part-leather finish, an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system (later upgraded to 10 inches) and – since the 2019 facelift – Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.

The dash is high-tech, with a screen and tactile dials for ease of use. As a passenger, you'll be spoilt for storage space, with roomy door bins and plenty of places to stow things away.

The Land Rover Discovery Sport is the ideal family car, with enough seating for large families and ISOFIX child car seat mounts in the outer rear seats to keep the little ones safe. The roofline is high enough to comfortably seat tall passengers, with front and rear seating offering plenty of leg room as well. The cabin has an overall spacious feel, particularly if your chosen trim comes with the glass roof.

Technology

As you climb through the trim levels, you'll find many Land Rover Discovery Sports come with features like cruise control to help with long journeys, reverse cameras and parking sensors to make parking easier. There are also heated and electrically adjustable front seats for comfort and convenience, and leather upholstery and detailing packs for that extra luxurious feel. Additional driver assistance includes traffic sign recognition, automatic headlights, an electric tailgate and boot and blind spot assist.

Safety

The Euro NCAP safety test awarded the Discovery Sport five stars, with an 84% adult-occupancy and 89% child-occupancy rating, each respectively the second highest score in its entire class.

Trims available on the Land Rover Discovery Sport

Discovery Sport SE

The Land Rover Discovery Sport SE is the entry-level trim and comes with an impressive suite of tech, gadgets and features to start the lineup. Riding on 18-inch alloy wheels, the Discovery Sport SE comes with heated front seats for extra comfort on cold days. Cruise control makes those long drives easier, and LED headlights are a powerful and energy-efficient way to light your way through the dark. As well as parking sensors, a reversing camera is displayed on the 10-inch touchscreen infotainment display.

Discovery Sport Urban Edition

The Urban Edition is all about life in the city, featuring eye-catching 20-inch alloy wheels and privacy glass. Rear animated indicators add a touch of personality. Pivi Pro-Land Rover's infotainment system comes with connected navigation, helping you keep on course wherever you're heading. Automatic headlight levelling keeps your lights where they should be and traffic sign recognition helps make you aware of changes in speed limit. The ClearSight rear-view mirror uses the rear-mounted camera to give you a view behind in case your rear window is obscured. There is an electric tailgate to help you get things in and out of the boot easily.

Discovery Sport R-Dynamic SE

The Discovery Sport R-Dynamic SE receives iconic gloss black styling on top of everything in the previous trims, as well as a sports styling kit and ebony-grained leather seats. Blind spot assist and the rear traffic monitor make navigating tight and tricky situations much less stressful.

Discovery Sport R-Dynamic HSE

The Discovery Sport R-Dynamic HSE is the top-spec trim for the Land Rover Discovery Sport. It upgrades the headlights to Matrix LED headlights, which automatically dims the parts of the headlight beam that would otherwise blind other road users. There are upgraded 14-way electric front seats, keyless entry and a Meridian sound system for a high-quality sound experience.
