What is the Mazda2 Hybrid?

The Mazda2 Hybrid is Mazda’s first full-hybrid vehicle and was first released in 2022 to coincide with the second facelift of the third generation Mazda2. This model is heavily based on the Toyota Yaris and borrows its full hybrid technology meaning it stands apart from the Mazda2’s petrol and mild hybrid options.

Like the Mazda2, the hybrid model is a compact size and is highly practical, making it an excellent car for city driving. With affordable running costs, desirable styling and good cabin comfort, it is an all-round model for a wide range of different drivers.

Its full-hybrid engines make the Mazda2 Hybrid a worthy challenger to other green hatchbacks like the Honda Jazz as well as practical models such as the SEAT Ibiza, Škoda Fabia and Ford Fiesta.

Mazda2 Hybrid history

The Mazda2 Hybrid is the product of a long-standing agreement between Mazda and Toyota. Providing electrification technology, the Hybrid has been built by Toyota but sold by Mazda alongside the existing Mazda2.

This model was first released in 2002 as a subcompact model. The second generation launched in 2007 and won World Car of the Year in 2008. This second generation was smaller than the first and came with either a 1.3-litre or 1.5-litre petrol engine, as well as a bi-fuel LPG option.

The third generation launched in 2013 with the Mazda2 Hybrid launching in 2022. Its height of 1500mm makes it 30mm taller than the Mazda2. Its width of 1,745mm means it is 50mm wider.

Before the unveiling of the hybrid, Mazda had yet to produce a full-hybrid model, instead opting for mild hybrid technology across its range. But with ambitions to launch a hatchback to target eco-conscious urban drivers, Mazda leaned on its long-term partnership to produce the hybrid model.

The Mazda2 Hybrid entered production at Toyota’s production line in Valenciennes, France alongside the Toyota Yaris before being re-badged as the Mazda2 Hybrid.

While the Mazda2 is available with a range of petrol and diesel engines, the Mazda2 Hybrid was launched with a three-cylinder, 1.5-litre petrol with full hybrid technology. It has a 0.76kWh lithium-ion battery that powers both the front and rear wheels. This creates a 114bhp engine that travels from 0-62mph in 9.7 seconds and returns 74.3mpg. This engine is paired with an e-CVT gearbox.

For comfort, while you drive, you can relax into part-leather and cloth front seats. These come with side lumbar supports which offer even more support while you drive.

On the centre console, you’ll find a 7- or 8-inch touchscreen, which comes with DAB radio, Bluetooth, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. You can easily link your smartphone to the display, helping you take control of the hybrid’s infotainment options.

A used Mazda2 Hybrid is a safe model thanks to its smart range of safety features, as well as advanced active and passive safety systems. For this reason, it was awarded a five-star safety rating with adult and child occupancy scores of 86% and 81% respectively.

It comes with a full speed-range adaptive cruise control system which slows your speed to maintain a fixed distance with the vehicle in front. There is lane trace assist, a speed assist system and automatic emergency braking for vulnerable road users in front of the car.
