White Mazda CX-30 from the front sitting side on

Stylish, modern and sophisticated, this SUV continues Mazda’s trend of producing iconic cars that are practical and safe to drive. With ISOFIX mounts and award-winning safety ratings, the Mazda CX-30 is the ideal family car that cuts a sporty figure around the city and makes short work of rural roads.

Mazda CX-30 updates and facelifts

Since its release in late 2019, the CX-30 has earned accolades in design and versatility. WhichCar?'s Wheels Car of the Year 2021 prize was handed to the CX-30 with a unanimous vote. It also won the Golden Steering Wheel in 2019, the Red Dot Design award in 2020 and was a finalist for the 2020 World Car of the Year award. The model has not yet had a facelift.

This five-door SUV comes with two choices of mild-hybrid petrol engines – a small selection that caters to a wide audience, offering performance and style no matter which trim you choose. Among rivals, the Mazda stands out as a fun, stylish vehicle perfect for small families in and out of the city.

Practicality and style of the car

There's plenty of space in a Mazda CX-30. Inside is roomy, comfortably seating two adults in the front and up to three children in the back. Two ISOFIX mounts are also on the outer rear seats, making this compact SUV perfect for all the family. With 430 litres of capacity, the boot is large, and this increases to 1,406 if you remove the parcel shelf and fold the rear seats flat.

If you need to take more with you, the Mazda CX-30 can tow up to 1,300kg (braked weight), perfect for medium-sized caravans, pop-up campers, fully laden trailers and more.

Running costs

Running your used Mazda CX-30 won't cost the earth. The entry-level trims fall in insurance group 12, with the highest-level trim and engine spec climbing to group 19 out of 50. A since-discontinued limited-edition 100th Anniversary trim was placed in group 21, which is still lower than its rivals.

Thanks to its mild-hybrid engine types, the road tax costs are on the low end of the scale as well. The Mazda CX-30 sets you back just £180 per year for 2019 models onwards.

How a used Mazda CX30 drives

Close up of Mazda CX-30 steering wheel

The Mazda CX-30 is characteristically pleasurable to drive. The steering is light without feeling flimsy or insubstantial. The six-speed automatic gearbox is well-designed and handily finds the gears quickly and the throttle is responsive. With the right trim, you can turn on sports mode to make the gearbox snappier and the throttle even more responsive, making the SUV feel even sportier.

Mazda's naturally aspirated Skyactiv engines combine fuel-saving technology found in diesel engines with mild hybrid technology, making for great performance and fuel efficiency.

The Mazda CX-30 comes with two engine choices, both 2.0-litre. The first is the front-wheel drive Skyactiv-G, producing 118bhp for a maximum speed of 116mph. On the automatic gearbox, it'll get you from 0-62mph in 11.2 seconds, while the manual achieves the same in 10.8 seconds. It produces 127g/km of CO2 emissions and returns between 45.6 and 47.9mpg.

The next is the Skyactiv-X, available with front or all-wheel drive. Producing 184bhp, it has a top speed of 127mph and, with an automatic gearbox, will get you from 0-62mph in just nine seconds. It produces 149g/km of CO2 emissions and returns between 42.8- 46.3mpg. Both manual and automatic gearboxes are six-speed.

Features you can expect in a Mazda CX-30

Interior

Mazda CX-30 interior front seats, centre console and gear stick, dashboard, infotainment screen, digital instrument cluster and steering wheel

With a roomy glove compartment, spacious cubbies and a deep central console, there are plenty of places to store things inside the Mazda CX-30. There is enough space for your phone in front of the large cup holders and a dedicated sunglasses box just behind the rear-view mirror.

With the CX-30, Mazda has steered away from a touchscreen infotainment system. There is a tactile dial behind the gear stick to operate the 8.8-inch ultrawide display, which displays your navigation and media functions. Buttons on the steering wheel for volume control, dashboard information and cruise control depending on the trim help keep control at your fingertips.

There is also Bluetooth, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay functionality to make full use of your smartphone for further control over route guidance and in-car entertainment.

The cloth seats are comfortable in the CX-30, opting for a premium trim upgrades you to leather seats. The cabin interior is finished with soft-touch materials, making for a luxurious finish inside.

With certain trims, the driver's seat is electrically adjustable, while both front seats may be heated. The front seats are roomy and even in the back there is plenty of headroom for even the tallest passengers.

Technology

The Mazda CX-30 comes with a range of technology depending on the trim you choose.

Getting things in and out of the Mazda CX-30 is easy, thanks to the powered tailgate on some trims. On the go, there are LED headlights and LED daytime running lights with the right trim, giving a stylish and power-efficient aesthetic to the already striking design.

If you have an automatic gearbox, the radar cruise control can bring the car to a complete halt if you get caught in heavy traffic. The driver's mirror and rear-view mirror can automatically dim, helping with anti-dazzle.

While on the road, you can drive comfortably thanks to the heated steering wheel, heated front seats and dual-zone climate control and listen to your favourite music over the 12-speaker Bose sound system.

Once the journey's over, with front and rear parking sensors, a rear parking camera and a 360-degree camera, you can park your used Mazda CX-30 with confidence.

Safety

The CX-30 has helpful features to keep you safe on the road, like lane-keep assist to ensure you're not drifting while travelling on motorways, A-roads and dual carriageways and smart braking to help you avoid collisions.

Perhaps the most impressive accomplishment comes from the Euro NCAP safety test. Scoring a full five stars, the Mazda CX-30 scored 86% for child occupant protection and set a record high with an adult occupant protection score of 99%. On the overall list of cars in its class tested in 2019, it ranked second.

Mazda CX-30 SE-L Lux

For further assistance with parking, the SE-L Lux adds a rear parking camera and front parking sensors. The rear-view mirror and driver’s door mirror automatically dim, meaning you can drive confidently in low light. Comfort is increased thanks to dual-zone climate control and heated front seats.

Mazda CX-30 Sport Lux

The Sport Lux adds further to the impressive arsenal offered in the CX-30 lineup, adding LED daytime running lights and upgrading to 18-inch alloy wheels. The inclusion of a powered tailgate makes life easier when getting things in and out of the boot, while privacy glass and a redesigned frameless rear-view mirror add to the stylish aesthetic Mazda is known for.

Mazda CX-30 GT Sport Tech

The GT Sport Tech is the CX-30’s top-level trim. Comfort gets a significant upgrade with the addition of a heated steering wheel, leather seats and a 12-speaker Bose sound system for extra audio oomph. The driver’s seat is electrically adjustable and the driver’s door mirror gains a memory function, making switching between drivers hassle-free. It also automatically dips when reversing to help make sure you’re between the lines.

Further parking assistance is found in the 360-degree camera, meaning you can be sure you’re avoiding any nasty bumps and scrapes. The enhanced safety package adds rear smart braking, driver monitoring for alertness and cross-traffic alerts.
