Mercedes-Benz B Class updates and facelifts

The first generation arrived on the UK market in 2005, the Mk2 was launched in 2012 and the Mercedes-Benz B-Class moved into its third generation in 2019. The Mk3 saw some upgrades and a subtle redesign, including a larger infotainment screen going from a seven-inch screen to 10.25 inches.

The Mk3 received a facelift in 2023, which again saw some subtle changes to the exterior, such as new adaptive LED headlights, and the interior received some new material finishes. The Mk3 also came with a reduced engine selection to just a singular diesel and a mild-hybrid petrol engine, both of which are efficient and perform well.


Practicality and style of the car

As a small MPV, the Mercedes-Benz B-Class comes with plenty of space to store luggage and transport bulky items. Coming with a large 455-litre boot, which can be expanded to 1,530 litres, the B-Class offers drivers a flat loading bay to store suitcases and other items for easy transportation. In comparison to its rivals, the B-Class offers a good amount of space. The BMW 2 Series Active Tourer comes with 406 litres of space and an expanded size of 1512 litres – smaller than the B-Class. The seven-seater Ford Tourneo Connect also has less capacity, with a boot size of 332 litres which expands to 1,287 litres with the rear seats folded.

In models with the hybrid engine, the boot space drops to 420 litres and 1,505 litres as the battery and motor require a little extra space. However, this capacity is still larger than that offered by the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer and the Ford Tourneo Connect.

The boot also comes with a series of useful features to help when loading items. Besides the wide opening and large flat loading bay, there are shopping bag hooks, straps and netting to help secure items when driving. There is a 12-volt socket that comes in handy for charging smartphones or other accessories when camping. There are also ISOFIX points in the rear seats for securing child seats in place.


Running costs

The Mercedes-Benz B-Class falls into insurance groups 15 to 31 and has a road tax between £170 to £180, depending on the engine and trim of the vehicle. The Mercedes-Benz B-Class sits lower than the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer which falls into insurance groups 22 to 33.


How a used Mercedes B-Class drives

Available with petrol, diesel or hybrid engines, the Mercedes-Benz B-Class offers drivers the choice to find the best performance and fuel economy for their needs. In iterations after 2023, B-Class cars come with either the B220d diesel engine or the B200 petrol engine with mild hybrid assistance.

The petrol range consists of three engines. The 1.3-litre B180 petrol engine can put down 134bhp and achieves 0 to 62mph in 8.7 seconds. This has a fuel economy between 41.5 and 61.4mpg. Next is the 2.0-litre B250 petrol engine, which is capable of 221bhp and completes 0 to 62mph in 6.9 seconds. This engine returns 39.8mpg.

There is also a 1.3-litre B200 petrol engine with mild hybrid assistance from a 13bhp electric motor. This can put down a combined 161bhp with 270Nm and achieves 0 to 62mph in 8.4 seconds.

The diesel range consists of four engines. The 1.5-litre B180d starts off the range, putting down 114bhp and completes 0 to 62mph in 10.4 seconds. This engine returns between 54.3 and 70.6mpg.

The 2.0-litre diesel engine comes in three versions. The newer B180d, on iterations after 2021, puts down 114bhp and can achieve 0 to 62mph in 9.8 seconds. The B200d puts down 148bhp and completes 0 to 62mph in 8.5 seconds, while the B220d puts down 187bhp and achieves 0 to 62mph in 7.2 seconds. The 2.0-litre diesel engines return between 54.3 and 55.4mpg.

Alongside the mild-hybrid petrol engine, another hybrid engine is available on the Mercedes-Benz B-Class. This 1.3-litre B250e petrol engine comes with a 15.6kWh battery and can put down a combined 215bhp and 450Nm of torque. It achieves 0 to 62 in 6.8 seconds and returns between 43.5–235.4mpg.

Features you can expect in a Mercedes-Benz B-Blass

Interior

The Mercedes-Benz B-Class comes with a handsome and stylish interior that resembles the premium look of other Mercedes-Benz vehicles such as the A-Class. As a result, the cabin is comfortable and intuitive. All five occupants inside the cabin will have plenty of legroom and headroom. The driver and front passenger get good visibility of the road and can adjust their seats for extra comfort, including extendable seat bases that provide extra support for your legs.

Storage spaces are located throughout the cabin and provide plenty of space to stow away personal items. In the front, there is a good-sized glove box, a deep compartment located in the armrest, a pair of cupholders, a small tray in the front of the centre console and deep door bins. In the rear, there are moderately deep door bins that can be used to store water bottles or other items.

There are also USB charging points located in both the front and back, as well as a 12-volt socket. These can be used for charging various devices, and, in the front, they enable you to connect smartphones to the infotainment system.


Technology

Located in the centre of the dashboard is the infotainment screen with Mercedes-Benz's MBUX system, which comes with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone connectivity. The Mk2’s infotainment screen is 7 inches, while the Mk3’s is 10.25 inches. Sat nav is integrated into the infotainment system. Both screens have high-quality graphics that help make navigating the menu quick and easy. This system can be controlled through either the touchscreen interface, the buttons located on the steering wheel or Mercedes-Benz's ‘Hey Mercedes’ voice control feature. In iterations before 2023, drivers can use a touchpad that is located on the centre console to navigate the menu.

On the Mk3, there is a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster that replaces the traditional dials. This is available on all trims except for the entry-level Sport Executive trim. On the AMG Line Premium trim, a head-up display is included in the Mercedes-Benz B-Class. Important information such as speed and sat nav directions are projected onto a small glass panel in front of the driver, helping them stay focussed on the road.

B-Class also comes with a range of features that assist the driver when on the road. These include active lane keep assist, which helps to prevent the vehicle from drifting out of the lane, as well as lane change assist. The attention assist system can detect when the driver is fatigued and issue an alert to take a break. Adaptive high beam assist automatically switches between high beam to low beam when there is an oncoming car. The Mercedes-Benz B-Class also comes with a speed limit assist which uses traffic sign recognition to find local speed limits and adjusts cruise control accordingly.


Safety

The Mercedes-Benz B-Class scored a full five stars on the Euro NCAP safety test. This included high scores on adult and child occupant protection tests, scoring 96% and 90%, respectively. In comparison, the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer scored 88% and 81%, while the Ford Tourneo Connect scored 84% and 82% on adult and child occupancy protection. Only the Volkswagen Touran came close to matching the Mercedes-Benz B-Class, scoring 88% and 89%.

There are a number of safety features on a Mercedes-Benz B-Class. Active braking assist helps to prevent collisions by issuing distance and collision warnings before resorting to using the autonomous emergency braking system. Blind spot assist helps with locating obstacles within the driver’s blind spots. Evasive steering assist supports manoeuvres when swerving to prevent a collision on the road. The Pre-Safe Plus feature detects rear collisions and applies the brakes to prevent the car from continuing to move forward.

Mercedes-Benz B-Class Sport Executive

The Sport Executive trim is the entry-level trim for the Mercedes-Benz B-Class. Inside you will find an infotainment display system with integrated sat nav, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone connectivity, a reversing camera and heated front seats. Exterior features include LED lighting, parking sensors, 18-inch alloy wheels and privacy glass.


Mercedes-Benz B-Class AMG Line Executive

The AMG Line Executive trim adds some AMG badged finishes to the vehicle. Inside you can find a 10.25-inch digital instrument display, a three-spoked sports steering wheel, sports seats, 64-colour ambient lighting and Atrico man-made leather upholstery. On the exterior, the B-Class has AMG body styling, a diamond radiator grille and 18-inch AMG badged alloy wheels.


Mercedes-Benz B-Class AMG Line Premium

The AMG Line Premium trim adds some premium AMG badged features to the B-Class. Step inside and you will find an upgraded sound system, dual-zone control and an augmented reality navigation system that gives you better directions and view of the local area. The inside also includes a heads-up display, a 360-degree parking camera and a panoramic sunroof. Other features include keyless entry, adaptive headlights and illuminated door sills so you can get out of the car safely when exiting the vehicle at night.
