White MG3 from the front

The MG3 offers drivers a stylish and spacious cabin that offers good performance as well as low running costs. The supermini hatchback is an attractive choice for drivers looking for a small and practical car to get about town in or for occasional longer-distance drives.

The MG3 competes with other superminis and small city cars on the market, such as the Ford Fiesta, Dacia Sandero, Kia Rio and the Volkswagen Polo.

MG3 updates and facelifts

White MG3 from the front

The MG3 was launched in the UK in 2013. In 2016, the MG3 received a facelift, which saw some subtle changes made to the exterior. A 1.5-litre petrol engine was also added, the VTi Tech EU 6, which reduced car emissions. In 2018, some changes were made to the interior and exterior. An updated styling kit was added, incorporating redesigned bumpers, front grille and side skirts. In the interior, an eight-inch touchscreen infotainment system and multifunction steering wheel now come as standard.

Practicality and style of the car

White MG3 from the side

The MG3 comes with a decent sized boot. It offers 285 litres of space, which expands to 1,262 litres by folding down the seats. The boot door opens wide, allowing for good access. This is useful when loading or unloading bulky items. The square shape of the boot helps you use every square centimetre of space when transporting storage boxes or suitcases. There is also a good amount of underfloor storage which can be used to store valuables or safety equipment out of view.

The boot of the MG3 nearly matches that of the Ford Fiesta with 292 litres, and when expanded offers more boot space than the Dacia Sandero, with 1,108 litres, and the Volkswagen Polo, with 1,125 litres.

The MG3 offers a roomy cabin with good leg space that can seat five passengers. Wide-opening passenger doors make getting in and out of the car easy and are useful when installing car seats into the rear ISOFIX anchor points.

The MG3 features effective noise damping to keep the cabin relatively free of engine, road and wind noise. Storage spaces are also located around the cabin, helping to keep the cabin clutter-free. In the front there is a generously sized glovebox and a small cubby in the front of the centre console with a USB charging point. Door bins in the front and rear are big enough to hold a water bottle or other personal items. In the rear, the Exclusive Nav trim adds map pockets on the back of the front seats for stowing away entertainment devices.

Running costs

The MG3 falls into insurance groups 4 to 8 and has an annual road tax between £150 and £180. The MG3 can fall into a lower group than most of it rivals. The Ford Fiesta for example sits in insurance group 2 to 30 and the Dacia Sandero falls into groups 3-14. Road tax for the MG3 is about average for its class.

How a used MG3 drives

A used MG3 comes with a 1.5-litre Dohc VTi-TECH petrol engine which can put down 104bhp. This achieves 0 to 62mph in 10.4 seconds and has a good fuel efficiency, returning between 41.7 and 59.6mpg. The engine is available with a manual gearbox.

The 1.5-litre engine is well suited to travelling around town or going to the shops as well as for motorway trips.

Interior

MG3's interior front seats, handbrake, centre console, gear stick, dashboard, infotainment screen and steering wheel

The interior of the MG3 is stylish and has plenty of technology to satisfy modern drivers. The 2018 facelift subtly redesigned the interior to give it more modern look. Robust and soft-touch materials in the interior mean it can stand up to everyday life.

The centre console of the Excite and Exclusive Nav trim features an eight-inch infotainment screen. This comes with Apple CarPlay and Bluetooth smartphone connectivity, meaning drivers can access their music libraries, contacts and navigation apps – the Exclusive Nav trim includes MG’s iGo sat nav system. This is controlled via the touchscreen interface or the controls located on the steering wheel.

Music and other audio is projected into the cabin via four speakers on the Excite trim and six on the Exclusive Nav trim.

The Exclusive Nav trim is equipped with a reversing camera, this is particularly useful with the MG3s compact dimensions allowing it to fit into tight parking spaces. Other features include; Cruise control and Hill hold, which helps the driver make a hill start by preventing the car from rolling back until the driver accelerates.

Safety

The MG3 scored three stars out of five on the Euro NCAP safety test. This compares well with the Kia Rio, which also scored three stars, and puts it above the Dacia Sandero’s two stars. Safety features on the MG3 include a full complement of airbags located around the cabin for passenger and driver protection, tyre pressure monitoring, emergency braking assist and a seatbelt reminder system. As standard, the MG3 comes with stability and traction control, which prevents the car from rolling over or skidding in the event of a collision or sharp braking.
