The MG ZS is a fusion vehicle that won’t be forgotten in a hurry. This subcompact crossover SUV is produced by SAIC Motor under the British MG marque. The design delivers elegance and adventure while maintaining affordability. So, whether you're navigating city streets or exploring off-the-beaten-track destinations further afield, the MG ZS is primed to deliver a smooth and enjoyable ride.
After launching at the Auto Shanghai Motor Show in China in 2017, the MG ZS was named the ‘Best Used Small SUV’ at What Car? Electric Car Awards. It was acknowledged for its ample space, practicality and extensive features.
MG ZS updates and facelifts
The first major facelift of the MG ZS was introduced in 2019, featuring updated front and rear bumpers, a redesigned grille, revised headlights and taillights and a larger 10.1-inch infotainment screen. It also featured a 1.5-litre SAIC NetBlue Blue Core Power Technology I4 engine, which focuses on optimising fuel efficiency and reducing emissions. Other notable features included six airbags and a 360-degree view monitor to make parking into tight spots easier.
In 2020, another facelift was introduced, incorporating several cosmetic enhancements such as the addition of 17-inch alloy wheels, a modified front bumper featuring LED headlights and an upgraded radiator grille. This facelift also had a refreshed rear bumper equipped with a skid-plate and imitation exhaust tips.
The MG ZS is available in several different configurations. Choose the five-door SUV and hatchback options for easy access and a touch of sportiness or go for the sedan variant if you’re seeking a sophisticated four-door body type.
Practicality and style of the car
The MG ZS stands out as a highly practical small SUV, offering ample space for all occupants. It comes with a rear bench that provides plentiful head and legroom, offering a spacious experience even for long journeys. Enhancing its family-friendly appeal, the MG ZS features two ISOFIX child seat fittings positioned on the outer rear seats, making it the perfect companion for family life.
Storage is equally generous, courtesy of well-designed door pockets and cubbyholes distributed throughout the cabin, enabling convenient access to your essentials during your journey.
The MG ZS has a boot capacity of 448 litres with the rear seats in place and 1,375 litres with the seats folded down. For comparison, the Nissan Juke has much less, with 354 litres of rear seat space and 1,189 litres with the rear seats folded down, positioning the MG ZS as a strong option if you require a larger boot.
MG ZS boasts a reasonable towing capacity of 500kg, allowing you to tow many lightweight loads like small utility trailers, jet skis or small boats.
The MG ZS falls between 10 and 11 on insurance groups. It is often cheaper to insure than rivals like the Nissan Juke, which falls between groups 8 and 26 depending on the car’s engine and age.
All trims have a standard road tax rate of £180 annually, with CO2 emissions ranging from 129g/km to 166g/km.
How a used MG ZS drives
The MG ZS presents a refreshing solution with its two petrol engine options, catering to those seeking simplicity instead of an overwhelming array of engine types. You have a choice between the entry-level 1.5-litre four-cylinder model, available with a five-speed manual gearbox, or a three-cylinder T GDI turbocharged 1.0-litre model, which comes with either a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic gearbox.
The entry-level engine delivers 106hp and 141Nm of torque, taking you from 0 to 62mph in 10.9 seconds and reaching a top speed of 109mph whilst providing 41.1mpg. The 111hp 1.0-litre T GDi turbocharged engine achieved 0-62mph in 12.2 seconds, reaching a top speed of 112mph with 160Nm of torque and achieves 38.6-42.7mpg. The 1.0 GDI Automatic engine achieves 44.9pmg.
The MG ZS’s strong performance makes it an excellent option for both daily city driving and motorway cruising.
All three gearboxes excel in their performance. The manuals offer a smooth and user-friendly gear change, while the six-speed automatic provides a very satisfactory performance.
