For used Renault Grand Scenic cars, choose Arnold Clark

The Renault Grand Scenic has long held the position of being a practical and family-friendly option ever since its launch in 2003. The Grand Scenic is a practical, 7-seater contender in the popular MPV market, with rivals including the Volkswagen Touran, Ford C-MAX and SEAT Alhambra.

Renault Grand Scenic updates and facelifts

The Renault Grand Scenic has won numerous awards over the years – such as winning first place in the MPV category for the What Car? Green Awards in 2011 as well as Best MPV at the UK Car of the Year Awards in 2017. Although the model is now discontinued in the UK, a used Grand Scenic continues to be a great choice for those looking for a spacious MPV that doesn’t compromise on innovative design.

The Grand Scenic has seen periodic refreshes to keep up with evolving trends and technology within the ever-changing world of automotive design. Originally released in 2003 to complement the Mk2 Scenic, the Grand Scenic provided a larger, 7-seater alternative to the standard Scenic and soon received a minor facelift in 2006. The Mk3 Grand Scenic was then released in July 2009, building on the success of the earlier models. In 2012 the Mk3 was given a facelift to include a new front end, engine and digital instrument cluster.

The Mk4 was launched at the Geneva Motor Show in 2016. Along with either a diesel or petrol engine, an eco-friendly hybrid option was also made available.

Practicality and style of the car

Renault’s Mk4 (2016-2020) Grand Scenic excels in providing a balanced package for families and individuals alike. One of its standout features is its generous boot space.

With all seven seats up, the Grand Scenic offers a respectable capacity of 233 litres, accommodating day-to-day needs. Fold the rear-most seats down, and this space increases to 765 litres. However, the model truly shines when you fold down all the rear seats, opening up a colossal boot space of 2,067 litres and easily handling bulky items, luggage or a substantial load. This outmatches competitors such as the Volkswagen Touran, which has a lower capacity of 187 litres (seats up) and 1,857 litres (seats down).

In terms of comfort, the Renault Grand Scenic can comfortably fit five people, with the option to flip up an additional two seats in the rear to transport seven. The sixth and seventh seats in the rear can be folded down when not in use to allow for extra luggage space. They also fold flush into the boot floor, maximising available space. With a braked towing weight of 1,300kg, it also makes it the ideal choice for those with a touring caravan.

Running costs

The Mk4 Renault Grand Scenic falls into insurance groups 11-21 depending on which engine and trim. This makes the Grand Scenic cheaper to insure than its competitors – such as the SEAT Alhambra with an insurance group range of 13-25.

The road tax for the used Grand Scenic varies based on the engine and trim, typically ranging between £150-£320. Some 1.5 dCi diesel engines fall into a lower tax band of £20. This is comparable to other makes in this class.

How a used Renault Grand Scenic drives

The 1.2 TCe turbo petrol option is a compact petrol engine, so it warms up quickly on chilly mornings and is easily driven around built-up areas. You can get this engine with either 115bhp or 130bhp. Despite their lighter capacity, both engines provide a surprising performance thanks to their turbos. Both options provide 46.3mpg and deliver a very responsive drive.

The most economical choice is the 1.5 dCi diesel option as it not only boasts 70.6mpg but also a range of 816 miles on a full tank. Fitted with a turbo and 260Nm of torque The 1.5 dCi Grand Scenic provides a smooth drive, making it especially useful for driving around town as the higher engine torque allows the engine to provide increased power at lower revs. This combined fuel economy and engine torque also makes the 1.5 dCi great for longer journeys.

The Mk4 Grand Scenic is also available as a hybrid with a 1.5 dCi Hybrid Assist option. The hybrid system incorporates regenerative braking, which captures and stores energy during braking or deceleration in a 48V, 150Wh onboard battery. This energy is then used to recharge the hybrid battery, increasing fuel efficiency and reducing wear on the brake pads. Featuring a 10kW electric motor that assists the diesel engine, the fuel efficiency is increased to 80.7mpg from its standard diesel counterpart of 70.6mpg. Extra torque is provided by the electric motor at low speeds and initial acceleration to help reduce the fuel consumption of the diesel engine.

The largest engine available in the Mk4 Renault Grand Scenic is the 1.6 dCi diesel. With a 130bhp or 160bhp option available for the 1.6 dCi, the choice is open to whether you prioritise fuel efficiency or performance. The 130bhp engine provides and 320Nm of torque, delivering a range of 711 miles on a full tank. The 160bhp engine gives an increased power output of 380Nm torque while still providing 699 miles on a full tank and 60.1mpg.

Fitted with a standard five or six-speed manual gearbox for all engine sizes, the 1.5 dCi and 1.6 dCi variants come with the option for Renault's EDC twin-clutch automatic transmission.

Features you can expect in a Renault Grand Scenic

Interior

The interior of the Renault Grand Scenic showcases a range of features and equipment designed to enhance the driving experience. The dashboard is elegantly designed, with intuitive controls that are easy to reach and use.

One notable feature is the abundance of cubbies and storage compartments. In typical Renault fashion, they make sure there’s a place for everything, from small personal items to larger luggage. This level of practicality is especially appreciated by families and individuals with an active lifestyle.

All versions of the Grand Scenic also come with a touchscreen infotainment system as standard. The Play trim has an easy-to-use seven-inch system featuring both DAB and Bluetooth, whereas the Iconic and higher-level trims have a more advanced R-Link 2 multimedia system with 3D sat nav with TomTom Live traffic and weather services and voice control. The R-Link system on the flagship Signature trim has a larger 8.7-inch screen.

Technology

The Renault Grand Scenic is well-equipped with an array of advanced technology features that enhance both safety and convenience during your driving experience.

One standout feature is the lane assist system, which works with the cruise control system. It helps you stay safely within your lane by providing steering assistance if you begin to drift unintentionally. This feature is particularly valuable during long motorway drives, reducing driver fatigue and enhancing safety. Other features include hill start assist to help achieve hill starts more easily by keeping the brakes on until you’re ready to accelerate.

Safety

Safety is paramount in the Renault Grand Scenic, evident through its impressive NCAP ratings and scores. In 2016 Euro NCAP awarded the Grand Scenic 5 stars. Achieving an adult occupant score of 90% and a child occupant score of 82%, the Grand Scenic beat the 2017 Ford C-MAX which scored 76% in the same test for adults and 79% for children.

Families will also benefit from the three ISOFIX anchorage points, located on the two middle-row outer seats and the passenger-side front seat, simplifying child car seat installation. Features such as electronic stability control and anti-lock brakes further enhance the model’s safety credentials.
