For used Toyota Yaris Cross cars, choose Arnold Clark

Offering great petrol and hybrid engine performance and affordable running costs, the Toyota Yaris Cross is a good option if you’re looking for a small SUV.

Following in the footsteps of the original Toyota Yaris, the Cross has a larger size so passengers can enjoy a more spacious cabin. It also has new stylistic features, including black plastic cladding around its wheel arches, a rugged front bumper and higher ground clearance.

Thanks to its broad appeal, the Toyota Yaris Cross competes with other small hybrid and non-hybrid SUVs such as the and the ŠKODA Kamiq. The Yaris Cross also has a wide range of trims, providing different levels of feature specifications.

Toyota Yaris Cross updates and facelifts

Filled with intuitive features and cabin technology, the Yaris Cross’ combination of family-friendly driving and good value has helped it become a mainstay in the supermini SUV vehicle segment. It also won the 2021 European Car of the Year Award, cementing its status as a go-to small SUV.

Launched in 2020, the Toyota Yaris Cross received an update in 2022 which added the GR Sport trim. This trim added an updated suspension kit, helping fine-tune the model’s handling and grip.

Practicality and style of the car

With a 397-litre boot, the Toyota Yaris Cross offers a good amount of storage space. This compares favourably to competitors such as the Hyundai Kona, which has 374 litres and the Renault Captur E-Tense’s 379 litres. By folding down the rear seats, you can expand the boot space to 1,097 litres – plenty for a small family’s suitcases and bags.

The Yaris Cross’ boot also comes with a split-level boot floor that can be raised or lowered to help load and unload items into the boot. This can also be used to store valuables out of sight or for safety equipment. A flex belt system can be used to secure large suitcases in place or prevent shopping bags from being loose

The Yaris Cross also comes with Toyota’s kick-activated door, which means that you only need to swipe your foot under the rear bumper to open the boot which is helpful when your hands are full. The two outermost rear seats come with ISOFIX anchor points to securely install child seats too.

Running costs

The Toyota Yaris Cross falls into insurance groups 11 to 13, with a yearly road tax of £170. In comparison to its rivals, the Toyota Yaris Cross offers excellent value, with the hybrid Renault Captur falling into groups 13 to 20. The non-hybrid ŠKODA Kamiq falls into insurance groups 9 to 20.

How a used Toyota Yaris Cross drives

The Yaris Cross comes with a 1.5-litre three-cylinder petrol engine and an electric motor, which can put down a combined 114bhp and 120Nm of torque. This engine can achieve 0 to 62mph in 11.2 seconds and has good fuel efficiency, returning between 55.3–64.1mpg. This engine also comes with an automatic CVT gearbox.

When driving below 30mph and with enough charge in the battery, the hybrid engine won’t kick in and will instead run on pure electric. Electric-only travel can also be selected by changing the drive mode to EV mode, giving you an electric top speed of up to 30mph. This engine is also available with four-wheel drive.

Features you can expect in a Toyota Yaris Cross

Interior

The Toyota Yaris Cross has a raised chassis giving it greater ground clearance, as well as giving you a higher driving position within the cabin. Both passengers and drivers have a good amount of headroom and legroom in the cabin. The seats in the front offer good levels of comfort and support, and the driver's seat is placed up high giving the driver a commanding view of the road ahead. Noise from the engine is relatively hushed and there is a good amount of insulation from wind and road noise inside the cabin.

Dotted around the cabin are several storage spaces to help you keep the interior tidy. In the front, there is a central cubby on the centre console as well as a good-sized glove box and cupholders. Depending on the trim, rear seat pockets and cup holders will also be available. Door bins are deep and can be used to stow away large water bottles and other personal items.

On the centre of the dashboard is an infotainment screen that can be eight or nine inches depending on the trim of the model. Entry-level trims, such as the Icon and Design, come with an eight-inch screen which includes Toyota’s Touch 2 infotainment system. Trim levels beyond this will have a nine-inch screen with Toyota’s Smart Connect system which provides you with real-time traffic updates.

Technology

Depending on the trim, you will also find a seven-inch digital instrument cluster that displays important drive information, including your speed, rev counter, fuel gauge and miles per gallon at a glance. Choose a Yaris Cross in the Premiere trim and you will have a 10-inch heads-up display that projects important information, such as your speed, on a small glass screen in front of the driver.

Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard across all trim levels allowing you to connect your smartphone to the infotainment system for onboard entertainment and hands-free calling. There are also shortcut buttons around the edge of the touchscreen which quickly take you to different menus and functions.

The Toyota Yaris Cross also comes with a range of driver assist features such as lane keep assist, which keeps the driver aware of their lane positioning through the use of an alert system. The Yaris Cross has high-beam assist which dips full-beam lights automatically when faced with other drivers on the road. Adaptive cruise control is another feature of the model, enhancing conventional cruise control by automatically speeding up and slowing down in response to traffic. LED headlights are also standard across all trims, providing the driver with good visibility on dark roads.

Safety

The Toyota Yaris Cross scored five stars on the Euro NCAP safety tests and also scored highly on the adult and child occupant protection tests, receiving 86% and 84%, respectively. The Toyota Yaris Cross also scored 81% for safety system assist. In comparison to its rivals, the Toyota Yaris Cross scored well, with the Hyundai Kona Hybrid scoring 87% and 85% in adult and child protection tests respectively and scoring 60% for safety assist.

Safety features on a used Toyota Yaris Cross include autonomous emergency braking, traction control and a pre-collision system as standard. Rear cross-traffic alerts and blind spot monitoring are available on the Excel trim onwards. Depending on the trim you choose, other safety features can include front and rear parking sensors, a reversing camera and a 360-degree camera.
