What is the Vauxhall Astra SRi?
The Vauxhall Astra SRi is the sporty trim on the Vauxhall Astra, a compact family car. The SRi has featured as a high-level trim on the Astra since the model’s third-generation release in 1991. Since then, it has been ever present in the Astra’s trim range.
The Vauxhall Astra SRi’s name stands for Sport Refinement injection and references the sporting roots of Vauxhall. This trim is a performance-orientated version of the Astra and comes with a range of powerful petrol and diesel engines. This makes it a great option if you’re looking for a sporty yet practical model. This also makes it a standout option in its vehicle class and a competitor to the SEAT Leon FR Sport, Hyundai i30 N-Line and Kia Ceed GT Line.
Vauxhall Astra SRi history
The third generation of Vauxhall Astra launched in 1991 and was the first generation to feature the SRi in the trim lineup. The Mk3 added subtle design changes and expanded on the range of engines available. The SRi was one of the higher-level trims on the model and came with a powerful 2.0-litre engine.
The SRi returned for the fourth generation of the Vauxhall Astra, which was released in 1998. This generation was available as a hatchback, estate and saloon. The SRi was equipped with a turbocharged 2.0-litre petrol engine, which again marked it as one of the higher-level trims.
The fifth generation was launched in 2004 and featured a smaller range of trims. The SRi trim was in the middle of the range, below the Elite trim and the flagship VXR. The SRi was available with two petrol engines. The first generated 197bhp while the second produced 168bhp. The 197bhp engine could accelerate from 0-62mph in just over 7.7 seconds.
The Mk6 was released in 2010 and was influenced by the design of the Vauxhall Insignia model. The SRi was the second highest level trim behind the SE. In the Mk6, the SRi was available with a powerful 1.6-litre petrol engine.
The seventh generation launched in 2015 and boasted an entirely redesigned body and style. It was available as a hatchback and an estate, with the SRi retained as one of the higher-level trims in the range. It came with a powerful selection of engines, 17-inch wheels, automatic wipers and lights and additional safety technology.
Two new editions of the SRi were also included in the Mk7’s trim lineup.
Where does the Vauxhall Astra SRi sit in the range?
The Vauxhall Astra SRi has been a consistently high-level trim across the Astra’s different generations. With its selection of high-performing engines, the SRi has always featured as one of the sportier trims in the range, with only the flagship VXR trim offering a more powerful engine.
What features and equipment does the Astra SRi have?
The Vauxhall Astra SRi is available with a range of 1.0, 1.4 and 1.6-litre petrol and diesel engines. To help you stand out on the road, there are 17-inch five-spoke alloy wheels, a chrome-effect upper window trim and silver-effect roof rails on the estate body. There’s also a sport switch that pushes your model into performance mode.
