Vauxhall Corsa updates and facelifts

Vauxhall launched the Corsa’s first generation, the Corsa A, in 1993 in the UK to replace the Vauxhall Nova. Available as a three-door or five-door hatchback it featured a range of petrol and diesel engines. Drivers praised the Vauxhall Corsa for its compact size, practical features and affordable price. The Corsa’s features, such as power steering, anti-lock brakes and alarm system, were a first for the market before at that price point.

Unveiled in 2000, the second-generation Vauxhall Corsa, known as the Corsa C, had a completely new design. It had an improved interior and class-leading technology. These included an Easytronic semi-automatic transmission option. Larger than previous models, it was an instant hit, particularly with first-time drivers. A facelift in 2003 introduced coloured bumpers, protective side rub strips and clear lens headlights.

Launched in 2006, the third-generation Vauxhall Corsa differed significantly from its predecessors. The 'Corsa D' boasted a sleeker and sportier design, better safety features and improved fuel efficiency. It modernised the Vauxhall lineup. It achieved this with the addition of start/stop systems, efficient engines and ecoFLEX technology.

The Mk4 Vauxhall Corsa (the Corsa E) arrived in 2014 and was available until 2019. It offered a range of petrol, diesel and electric powertrain options. It had a more stylish, aerodynamic body and advanced technology features. These included touchscreen infotainment and driver assistance systems.

The Vauxhall Corsa-e is available with a fully electric powertrain. The Sun voted it Car of the Year for its 209-mile range and budget-friendly price.

Practicality and style of the car

The Vauxhall Corsa’s practicality is one of the key reasons it remains one of the UK’s most popular cars. This is thanks to being budget-friendly and fuel efficient. They are surprisingly spacious for a supermini and are straightforward to drive. Its boot size is 309 litres — six litres more than its biggest competitor, the Ford Fiesta. Folding the back bench, you can extend the capacity to 1,118 litres. The Vauxhall Corsa is a practical and reliable choice. It provides ample room for sports equipment, school bags, weekly shopping or luggage items. Its electric variant, the Vauxhall Corsa-e, offers 267 litres of capacity. This is due to the location of its batteries. It has a decent 1,081 litres with the seats down.

The Mk5 Vauxhall Corsa's dimensions are longer than previous models. , It has a length of 4,060mm, a 1,944mm width with mirrors (1,746mm without mirrors) and a height of 1,433mm.

The Vauxhall Corsa is perfectly capable of towing light loads. Despite its status as a supermini, it has a stated towing limit of 1150kg so can handle small trailers.

Running costs

The Vauxhall Corsa is very reasonable to run. It has low tax and insurance groups that makes it the ideal run-around for a first car. It's a great choice for someone looking for an economical vehicle for city driving. If you buy a Vauxhall Corsa, you can expect to pay up to £180 a year on road tax (depending on the model). How a used Vauxhall Corsa drives

The fifth generation Vauxhall Corsa is available with a petrol engine or as a fully electric vehicle. Vauxhall has consolidated the trim levels available compared to previous generations. There are three specifications available. These include; the entry-level Design, sporty GS Line and the top-of-the-range Ultimate. All models use the same base as the 1.2-litre three-cylinder engine. The petrol engine produces 74bhp or with the 1.2 turbocharged powerplant, 99bhp or 128bhp. In 2018, the 99bhp Corsa won the Auto Express Engine of the Year. This was thanks to its impressive handling and excellent fuel economy.

A five-speed manual gearbox is standard on the 74bhp petrol vehicle. There is a six-speed manual gearbox on the 99bhp petrol variant. The 99bhp also has a eight-speed automatic transmission option. The eight-speed automatic comes as standard with the 128bhp variant.

The 74bhp petrol accelerates from 0-62mph in 12.4 seconds and has a top speed of 108mph. The turbocharged 99bhp petrol variant goes from 0-62mph in a speedy 9.3 seconds. This is quicker than its rival, the Volkswagen Polo, which needs 10.8 seconds to get to 62mph. With a top speed of 121mph, the turbocharged petrol delivers 205Nm of torque.

The Corsa Electric launched with a 134bhp electric motor and a 50kWh battery. This provides the Corsa-e with a range of 200-mile or more. A 2023 facelift added a 51kWh battery pack, boosting its power up to 154bhp. This also increased its range up to 246 miles.

Models produced between 2014 and 2019 return between 25 and 79mpg, 42.7mpg on average. Older iterations manufactured between 2006 and 2014 offering 24 to 77mpg. For models made from 2019 onwards, you get 46mpg, with an average of 45.5mpg.

Interior

The Corsa is an excellent choice for families. With Vauxhall ceasing production of its three-door variant, access to the back seat for families with younger children is more manageable.

There is room for five passengers, with its well-designed cabin offering plenty of room for a six-foot adult seated behind the driver. The seating is comfortable, supportive and easily adjustable and there is a good amount of storage space, including a small, enclosed storage bin. The front door bins have the capacity for a large water bottle and a pair of cupholders are in the centre console. Technology

The Vauxhall Corsa has many advanced driver technologies to protect you and your passengers in the event of an accident. Mk5 models offer many safety features, including autonomous emergency braking, front collision warning, lane keeping assist, traffic sign recognition, a speed limiter and cruise control.

The premium Ultimate trim features ‘Intellilux’ Matrix LED headlights that omit oncoming cars from their beam, illuminating the road ahead without dazzling oncoming cars.

Safety

Crash safety experts, Euro NCAP, have awarded the Vauxhall Corsa a four-star rating, scoring 84% for adult occupant protection and 86% for child occupants. This compares well to its rivals: the Peugeot 208 also received a four-star rating, with an 86% child occupant score, while the Ford Fiesta received a similar four stars and achieved a child occupant score of 84%.

All Corsas have twin front airbags as standard, with curtain airbags and side airbags available on some lines. There are two handy ISOFIX points making it straightforward to fit child seats.

Vauxhall Corsa SE

This entry-level Corsa comes fitted with several features that are not always standard in other brands. Vauxhall Corsa Design

The Design is a 2022 entry-level trim and brings with it several new features from previous editions. Complete with 16-inch alloy wheels and a touchscreen multimedia system. It has LED headlights that were previously reserved for the higher end trims, as well as a leather steering wheel, climate control and the new lane departure warning with lane assist.

Vauxhall Corsa Energy

Launched in 2016, the Corsa Energy entered the market as a mid-range Corsa that was fitted with various luxuries as standard, including a heated leather steering wheel, IntelliLink system with 7-inch touchscreen, digital radio and Bluetooth as well as a USB connection. Electrically adjustable door mirrors and tyre pressure monitors are just some of the gear packed into this affordable car. Vauxhall Corsa Griffin

This special edition was designed to mark 25 years of Corsa production and was limited to just 2,400 units – and it’s packed with features that, for its price, leaves its competitors lagging. With more features than the Energy model at a lower price, this limited edition was a standout car on launch. Its eye-catching upgrades include the matte black 16-inch alloy wheels (17-inch, 5 twin spoke gloss black with the 2021 model), matching door mirrors and sunroof along with a smart infotainment system that has a large 7-inch display, heated front seats and heated leather steering wheel and the 1.4-litre, low-emission petrol engine.

Vauxhall Corsa SRi

Another mid-range option, the CORSA SRi is fitted with 17-inch alloy wheels and sport suspension which provides a firmer, more aggressive feel. The sports styling continues through the car with sport front seats and pedals as well as tinted windows and front and rear sports body styling. A chrome-effect exhaust tailpipe completes the car’s sport aesthetic, while the rest of the features are the same as the SE.

Vauxhall Corsa Elite

The Ultimate is 2022’s high-end trim level and comes packed with features and top-of-the-range equipment that includes the stylish 17-inch, bi-colour alloy wheels and IntelliLux LED® Matrix headlights with LED taillights – effectively adding to this model’s curb appeal. The 10-inch colour touchscreen system provides sat nav and Apple CarPlay™/Android Auto™, while a 7-inch digital instrument cluster provides the driver with all the information they require.
