Practical, spacious and with an upmarket feel, the Vauxhall Insignia gives drivers the practicalities of a family hatchback while also delivering executive-style good looks. First launched at the British Motor Show in 2008, the Mk1 Vauxhall Insignia replaced the Vectra in Vauxhall’s line-up. The Insignia quickly rose to success and received the European Car of the Year award just one year later in 2009 – pipping the Ford Fiesta to the post in the same year that it outsold the Ford Mondeo.

Vauxhall Insignia updates and facelifts

The Insignia received a major facelift in 2017, which modernised the exterior look and ensured the Insignia continues to compete well with other family hatchbacks by putting it closer to more premium models. In 2020, the car received another facelift which saw subtle changes to the exterior design and the introduction of a new diesel engine.

The Mk2 Vauxhall Insignia competes well against more premium family cars on the market, including the BMW 3-series and Audi A4, and has a more upmarket feel than rivals such as the Ford Mondeo, Mazda 6 and Škoda Superb. This makes the Vauxhall Insignia a good middle ground when it comes to both price and performance.

Available in either petrol or diesel engines, and with all-wheel drive available with some engines for a more powerful ride, browse the collection available to find the right performance for you.

Practicality and style of the car

A popular car for business use, as well as a common choice among families, the Vauxhall Insignia offers drivers a practical, functional car that is as comfortable as it is smart.

When it comes to space – the Insignia is a solid choice with 490 litres of boot space – plenty enough for transporting large suitcases and your weekly shop. If ever you need more boot space, the capacity can be expanded up to a vast 1,540 litres by folding down the back seats, which rivals the total space offered by the Ford Mondeo hatchback at 1,466 litres. Furthermore, the wide opening of the boot allows for clear access to load and unload items with ease. The Insignia’s boot was specifically designed to not infringe on cabin space which remains spacious for passengers.

For larger items that can’t fit in the boot, the Vauxhall Insignia has a maximum towing capacity of between 1,500kg and 2,000kg, depending on which engine you opt for, which is more than enough to tow a trailer.

Running costs

The Insignia falls between insurance groups 17 and 30, with the more powerful GSi model placed in group 30 and with most other engines falling in the mid-twenties. The road tax for a used Vauxhall Insignia is between £180 to £570 a year, which competes with the more premium models such as the BMW 3-series and Audi A4 which congregate around the £570 price.

How a used Vauxhall Insignia drives

There is a range of efficient petrol and diesel engines available in a used Vauxhall Insignia. Starting with the petrol engines, the 197bhp 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine comes with six-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive. This engine is smooth and quiet at lower speeds and puts down good acceleration and torque at higher speeds, giving you enough power to confidently overtake on motorways. It also achieves a fuel economy of up to 39.2mpg.

On the GSi trim, a faster 227bhp 2.0-litre petrol engine is available with automatic transmission and four-wheel drive – perfect for the more adventurous drivers on rougher roads. This engine has a fuel economy of up to 35.8mpg.

For diesel engines, there is the 120bhp 1.5-litre diesel engine and a 172bhp diesel engine, both available in either six-speed manual or automatic transmission. Diesel engines in a Vauxhall Insignia come with a superior fuel economy between 56.5mpg to 61.4mpg.

Features you can expect in a Vauxhall Insignia

For business users – Vauxhall designed this car with long journeys in mind, ensuring comfort and functionality for all passengers. The car can easily fit four adults with no complaints on long journeys with the plentiful legroom and headroom available for passengers. The driver has a good view of the road, despite a low seat position, ensuring you can drive in both comfort and confidence. Whether you’re a driver or passenger, the cabin provides a pleasant ride and relaxing atmosphere thanks to the hushed road and wind noise.

Interior

In-cabin storage is also plentiful and is placed in strategic locations around the cabin. Generously sized door bins in the front and rear provide ample space for water bottles and other items for long journeys. The front console has several cubbies that are perfect for storing items that you and your passengers might need on-hand throughout the journey such as smartphones, sunglasses, snacks and other utility items. A pair of cupholders in the front and rear means that drinks are secured when driving and keeps the cabin clutter-free and clean.

Technology

The interior of the Vauxhall Insignia is furnished with high-quality materials and a clutter-free dashboard that is attractive and easy to use. The frameless infotainment screen slots into the central dashboard with sleek style and can come in two sizes: a 7-inch or an 8-inch screen, depending on the trim level. The infotainment system can be connected to your smartphone using Apple CarPlay or Android Auto connectivity to stream your favourite music or for hands-free calling. Satellite navigation is also available on some trims. A wireless smartphone charger can also be found on most trims allowing you to charge and connect your smartphone without cables getting in the way while you’re driving.

Behind the steering wheel, there are two analogue dials, for the fuel gauge and rev counter, flanking a central digital dial for the speedometer. The digital display is large and has clear graphics so you can easily see it when driving. On the steering wheel itself, buttons are conveniently located to control functions such as turning on cruise control, radio and music controls and, if applicable, the heating setting for the steering wheel itself.

More premium features are available on the higher-spec trims to provide extra comfort and luxury in a used Vauxhall Insignia. These can include features such as heated seats, rain-sensing automatic wipers, a massage function for the driver’s seat and upgraded leather upholstery.

Safety

The Vauxhall Insignia scored a full five stars for crash safety from Euro NCAP. It scored highly for both adult and child occupant protection at 93% and 85% respectively. The entry-level trim provides drivers with a generous set of safety features that include a forward collision alert that will notify the driver when sensors detect a potential collision, lane departure warning with lane assist to help you to stay in lane on the motorway and reduce risk of a collision, autonomous emergency braking. It also includes traffic sign recognition which alerts you when you enter new speed limit zones so you don’t miss them.
