Grey VW Arteon from the front

The Volkswagen Arteon is an elegant executive car with a spacious interior. The Arteon offers drivers a range of high-performing engines and a handsome exterior. The model is available as a hatchback or as an estate known as the Volkswagen Arteon Shooting Brake.

The Volkswagen Arteon competes well against other executive cars, both as a hatchback and an estate. The hatchback rivals the BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe, the Audi A5 Sportback and the Peugeot 508 Fastback, while the Volkswagen Arteon Shooting Brake rivals the Audi A4 Avant, BMW 3 Series and the Mercedes-Benz C-Class.

Volkswagen Arteon updates and facelifts

Grey VW Arteon from the rear

The Volkswagen Arteon was launched in 2017. In 2020, it received a facelift, which made some subtle changes to the exterior design, and the interior received a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and an 8-inch or 9.2-inch infotainment touchscreen. In the same year, the Volkswagen Arteon Shooting Brake was launched, and hybrid engines were also made available on the model.

Practicality and style of the car

The Volkswagen Arteon has a spacious boot that can hold large amounts of luggage and shopping if needed. The estate has a 565-litre boot, and the hatchback offers just two litres less. By folding down the rear seats using the convenient levers, the estate can be expanded up to 1,632 litres and the hatchback to 1,557 litres. The boot also has a ski hatch that allows for longer items to be stored without the need to fold down the rear seats.

In comparison to its rivals, both the estate and hatchback offer more space, with only the Peugeot 508 Fastback getting close with a maximum of 1,537 litres. The BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe offers 470 litres and 1,290 litres when expanded, and the Audi A4 Avant offers 495 litres and 1,510 litres when expanded.

For Volkswagen Arteon cars with hybrid engines the boot does reduce slightly but still offers a large 455 litres. This is because hybrid technology such as the battery and electric motors are situated in the rear of the car.

Running costs

The Volkswagen Arteon falls into insurance groups 21 to 35 and has an annual road tax of £180 to 570. This is about average for its class, with rivals falling within a similar bracket, such as the BMW 3 Series, which falls into groups 24 to 42.

The Volkswagen Arteon comes with a range of petrol and diesel engines as well as a hybrid engine. The petrol range consists of four engines. The entry-level engine is the 1.5-litre TSi petrol engine that can put down 148bhp and achieves 0 to 62mph in 9 seconds. This offers decent fuel economy, returning between 45mpg and 47.1mpg in automatic guise. Next is the 2.0-litre TSi petrol engine, which is capable of 187bhp. This engine achieves 0 to 62mph in 7.7 seconds and returns between 39.0-41.2mpg.

The 316bhp 2.0-litre TSi petrol engine achieves 0 to 62mph in just five seconds and returns around 31.0mpg. This engine is only available with the R trim. The 280bhp turbocharged 2.0-litre TSi petrol engine is available in iterations before 2019. This achieves 0 to 62mph in 5.6 seconds and returns between 33.7-35.4mpg.

The diesel range consists of three engines all using the same 2.0-litre TDi engine. The 148bhp version achieves 0 to 62mph in 9.5 seconds and 58.7–65.7mpg, while the 197bhp engine completes it in eight seconds and delivers 53.9mpg. The 197bhp engine also comes with four-wheel drive capability.

There is also a 236bhp diesel engine available in iterations before 2021. This achieves 0 to 62mph in 6.5 seconds and returns between 44.6mpg and 61.4mpg.

The hybrid engine available on a Volkswagen Arteon is a 1.4-litre TSi petrol engine mated with a 13kWh battery. It can put down a combined 214bhp and 400Nm of torque, achieving 0 to 62mph in 7.8 seconds and returning between 218.8mpg and 257.4mpg.

Features you can expect in a Volkswagen Arteon

Interior

VW Arteon rear interior seats

The Volkswagen Arteon has a handsome and stylish exterior, which helps it to stand out on the road. The front grille design gives the car a premium look, as does the sculpted bodywork. The Arteon’s upmarket look is reflected in the interior, with high-quality finishes and a clutter-free design. The cabin is comfortable and well-hushed from engine, road and wind noise.

Comfort within the interior of the Volkswagen Arteon is refined because of the soft suspension and the trio of driving modes that allow you to adjust the car’s performance and ride to suit the journey. There is also plenty of legroom and headroom in both the front and rear. Different trim levels add extra comfort features such as leather upholstery, sport seats and climate control.

The entry-level Elegance trim comes with electric driver’s seat adjustment along with four-way lumbar adjustment. On the flagship R trim, the driver's seat comes with memory settings and a massage and cooling function.

There are a series of storage spaces placed around the cabin of the Volkswagen Arteon. In the front, there is a small, lidded cubby, a good-sized glovebox, spacious door bins and a cubby located under the central armrest. In the rear, door bins provide enough space for personal items, such as entertainment devices or water bottles.

Technology

On the centre of the dashboard is the Arteon’s infotainment system. This comes as standard with an eight-inch screen but can also be 9.2 inches wide, depending on whether the car has the Discover Navigation Pro pack. The Discover system provides the infotainment system with sat nav, DAB radio and Bluetooth connectivity. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone connectivity also feature, meaning drivers can connect to their personal music libraries and contacts.

The infotainment system is controlled by either the touchscreen interface or via the controls located on the steering wheel. Navigating the menu is intuitive with shortcut functions available on the side of the infotainment screen that help drivers control car functions such as the three-zone climate control easily.

On iterations after 2020, Volkswagen’s 12.3-inch Digital Cockpit Pro display (a digital instrument cluster display) also features on the dashboard. This replaces traditional dials and can be customised to show a variety of information, such as sat nav mapping and directions, alongside conventional speed, fuel and rev counter dials. A head-up display is also available on the Volkswagen Arteon.

The Volkswagen Arteon comes with a range of driver assistance features, such as traffic sign recognition which notifies you of local speed limits and incoming speed cameras. Adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assist help to maintain the speed and position of the car in-lane when driving on the motorway. The exterior of the vehicle has a series of sensors and cameras that help the driver. For example, there is a rear-view camera that can be used to avoid collisions when reversing into or out of a parking space. Other features include blind spot warning and cross-traffic alert.

Safety

The Volkswagen Arteon was awarded a full five stars in the Euro NCAP safety test. The Arteon also scored well on adult and child occupant protection tests, scoring 96% and 85%, respectively. This is the same for both the hatchback and the estate. This competes with rivals such as the Audi A4 Avant which scored 89% and 87%, and the Peugeot 508 Fastback which scored 96% and 86% in adult and child protection respectively.

Safety features include Volkswagen’s Emergency Assist, which can detect if the driver has become incapacitated and slowly bring the vehicle to a stop in a safe position on the road, as well as automatic emergency braking. There is also a series of airbags located in both the front and rear for passenger and driver protection in the event of a collision. The Volkswagen Arteon comes with an active bonnet which is designed to release automatically in a collision to reduce the damage caused by the car.
