The Volkswagen Golf SV is a practical and spacious MPV that provides drivers with a good driving experience. Based on the Volkswagen Golf hatchback, the Golf SV offers families a well-equipped and spacious alternative to both the hatchback and estate variants. The large 500-litre boot and well-built exterior and interior helps the Golf SV to be an attractive car for growing families as it is designed to accommodate the practicalities of family life.
The Volkswagen Golf SV, rivals other MPVs such as the Ford C-Max, Citroën C4 SpaceTourer and the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer in terms of its boot size and carrying capacity. The Golf SV performs well against these rivals for practicality and safety. It is also well placed in the Volkswagen model range serving as an in-between for the Golf and Touran models.
Volkswagen Golf SV updates and facelifts
Standing for ‘Sportsvan’, the Volkswagen Golf SV was launched in 2014 to serve as a more practical Golf model for families. Volkswagen modified the dimensions of the Golf to provide passengers with more space and a larger boot.
The Mk2 Volkswagen Golf SV came out in 2017, and received some subtle design changes that included the addition of LED headlights and a sportier front and rear bumper design. Inside, an updated 9.2-inch infotainment system is offered, providing increased connectivity with the introduction of Volkswagen’s Media Control system. This allows owners to control car functions remotely. Wi-Fi hotspot technology was also included on the Golf SV, allowing passengers to connect to the internet while on the road. Volkswagen also updated the engines to offer a range of petrol engines, while discontinuing the range of diesel engines.
Practicality and style of the car
Both the driver and passengers will find plenty of room within the cabin of the Golf SV. The tall windows of the Golf SV gives the cabin a spacious feel. The seats are supportive to make long journeys enjoyable. Depending on the trim, the seats can be upholstered with either cloth, or on the SE or GT trim, leather. The SE and GT trim levels also get lumber support adjustment. The driver’s seat can also come with Volkswagen’s ErgoActive fitting, which includes extra padding and a massage function. The sliding rear bench also offers additional legroom helping to accommodate taller passengers in the rear.
There are also plenty of storage spaces around the cabin to help keep it clutter-free. In the front, there is a good-sized glove box. The centre console features a tray area which can be used to store smartphones when driving. There is a lidded compartment to keep valuables such as keys or wallets out of sight. The central armrest also lifts to reveal a cubby to store larger items such as sunglasses.
In the rear, there are fold down tray tables on the back of the front seats and map pockets to store entertainment devices away when not in use. There are storage hooks beneath the tray tables to prevent shopping bags from becoming loose when driving. Door bins in both the front and rear also provide a good amount of space to store large water bottles or other personal items.
The Volkswagen Golf SV offers drivers a large 500-litre boot. For extra storage space, the rear bench can be slid forwards, freeing up to 90 litres of extra boot space. though this doesn’t impact legroom. By folding down the rear seats, the boot can be expanded to up to 1,520 litres, which isperfect for suitcases and luggage.
The Golf SV offers a larger boot when compared to its rivals such as the Ford C-Max and the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer which offer a 471-litre and 415-litre boot, respectively, with the rear seats still in place.
With a flat loading bay, the boot can be filled easily when moving large items. The boot also comes with a variable floor which can be lowered or raised for extra practicality. This allows drivers to create a well in the boot floor when transporting shopping bags which prevents loose items from falling out when the boot is opened. This can also be used as a hidden storage area when raised.
For transporting larger items, the Volkswagen Golf SV can tow up to 1,600kg, depending on the engine size. With the 1.0-litre TSI petrol engine, the Golf SV can tow up to 1,000kg, while the 1.5-litre EVO petrol engine can tow up to 1,500kg. With the 2.9-litre TD diesel engine, the Golf SV can tow up to 1,600kg, which is enough to tow a trailer or small caravan.
The Volkswagen Golf SV falls into insurance groups 7 to 19 and has an annual road tax up to £180. In comparison, the Ford C-Max falls into insurance groups 10 to 27 and has an annual road tax of up to £240. The Citroen C4 SpaceTourer also falls into a higher insurance groups bracket of 14 to 25 and has an annual road tax of £200. In comparison to its rivals, the Volkswagen Golf SV is an affordable MPV.
