Ford overview

The Henry Ford Company – or Ford – was founded in 1903 and is today the second largest car US-based car manufacturer. With subsidiary companies operating around the world, it is also the sixth biggest car firm in the world. In the US, the Ford group also owns Lincoln – a luxury car producer. Globally, the group owns or part-owns businesses like Jiangling Motors, Ford Otosan and Ford Lio Ho, all of which give Ford a presence in countries such as China, Thailand and Turkey among others.

Ford initially began producing a small number of vehicles from its headquarters in Detroit, Michigan. But through the invention and adoption of the assembly line by its founder Henry Ford, the company soon began mass producing vehicles. The Model T was the first mass produced vehicle anywhere in the world and revolutionised the car manufacturing industry.

Ford – pronounced fawd – still produces many of the world’s most popular models today. Having developed a well-earned reputation for a range of practical and stylish models, many of Ford’s models also boast powerful and well-engineered engines.

And it’s thanks to its continuing manufacturing excellence that Ford has earned a global reputation as an award-winning marque. Among its wide range of manufacturer and model awards, Ford’s all-electric version of the best-selling F-150 Lightning truck was ranked by Time as one of 2022’s greatest inventions. Ford was also named the ‘Most Innovative Volume Brand 2023’ reflecting its commitment to pushing the boundaries of automotive manufacturing. Many of its models are multi-award-winning vehicles, such as the 2013 Ford Fiesta ST, which had won a total of 22 awards by 2014.

Having developed its reputation as one of the foremost manufacturers of petrol and diesel models, Ford has also launched a range of all-electric and hybrid engines. Its very first hybrid car was the compact crossover plug-in hybrid, the Ford Escape, which was first released in 2004. Ford’s first all-electric model was the Ford Ranger EV.

Since these initial releases, Ford has continued to add hybrid and electric engines to its range, culminating in the launch of the Ford Mustang Mach-E, which can travel up to 372 miles on a single electric charge.

Ford has launched numerous models over the years that have become popular mainstays within the UK market.

One of Ford’s longest-serving models is the Ford Fiesta, which was first released in 1976. It was in production for 47 years until it was discontinued in 2023. Over seven generations, the Ford Fiesta’s selection of powerful and efficient engines, distinctive style and great value helped it become one of the best-selling models in the world, with over 22 million units sold. Among its wide selection of awards, it was named Carbuyer’s Used Car of the Year in 2022 and Fleet News Award’s Best Small Car in 2019.

Sitting at the top-end of Ford’s SUV range, this model won What Car?’s ‘Small Sports Utility Vehicle of the Year’ three years in a row between 2022 and 2019.

The Ford EcoSport is another practical and stylish SUV. It’s an entry-level SUV and is well suited to families and those travelling long distances thanks to its good value and storage spaces.

Ford is known for its innovation, with these models being among the first to include technology such as turn signals on windshields, power steering and brakes. The EcoBoost engine is another notable innovation of Ford.
