The Alfa Romeo Tonale is a compact crossover SUV and is the brand’s first hybrid-powered model. First released in 2022, the Tonale is also the first new model launched by Alfa Romeo in six years.

Practicality and style of the car

The Alfa Romeo Tonale’s size means it offers good cabin space. Its length of 4,528mm means that it is 28mm longer than the BMW X1’s 4,500mm and 60mm longer than the Volvo XC40’s 4440mm.

This added length means the Tonale offers exceptional boot space. Depending on whether your model comes with a plug-in hybrid engine or the mild hybrid version, the Tonale has a standard boot space between 385 and 500 litres respectively. In comparison, the mild hybrid’s 500-litre capacity is more than you will find in the Volvo XC40, which has 452 litres of space.

By folding the rear seats down, this space can be expanded to 1,550 litres in the mild hybrid and 1,430 litres in the plug-in option. Both variants have more than the total 1,328 litres of space in the Volvo XC40 and more than the Mercedes-Benz GLA’s 1,420 litres.

The cabin has a good amount of knee and legroom, while most passengers will have enough headroom to stay comfortable over shorter distances. And thanks to the Tonale’s low floor, there’s a decent-sized footwell.

There are a good number of cubbies and storage slots that help keep the cabin tidy. Up front, you’ll find reasonably sized door bins and a central armrest cubby that has enough space for one or two handheld accessories. The glovebox is also roomy and the phone slot on the centre console holds most large phones when stored sideways.

If you’re looking for a suitable towing option, the Tonale is a good choice. The plug-in hybrid has a maximum braked towing capacity of 1,500kg while the mild hybrid has a maximum capacity of 1,250kg.

The Tonale has efficient running costs, with its insurance group ranging from 28 to 38. This compares favourably to the Audi Q3, which sits in groups 23 to 42. The Tonale qualifies for an annual road tax of between £180 and £570.

A used Alfa Romeo Tonale comes with two engine choices. The first is a plug-in hybrid Q4 engine. This pairs a 1.3-cylinder petrol engine – which powers the front wheels – with a 15.5kWh battery which drives the rear ones. This creates a 271bhp engine which can travel up to 42 miles on electric power alone. It goes from 0-62mph in 6.2 seconds and has a quoted 217mpg.

There is also a mild hybrid petrol option. It comes with front-wheel drive only and pairs a four-cylinder, 1.5-litre engine with a 20bhp electric motor. This creates a combined 158bhp engine which uses a seven-speed, dual-clutch transmission. This engine accelerates from 0-62mph in 8.8 seconds and returns up to 47.9mpg.

While the mild hybrid comes with a seven-speed automatic gearbox, there is also a six-speed automatic option too.

Interior

The interior of the Tonale is minimalist yet premium, making this a highly rewarding model to drive. Slide into the driving seat and you’ll enjoy firm, part-leather and cloth seats that offer you plenty of comfort on long distances. Technology

The Tonale has a smart range of technology which helps ease your driving. For backing into tight city spots, there is a reversing camera which comes with dynamic lines to help you find the perfect spot. Front and rear parking sensors are another handy assist for tricky spots.

On the outside, the Tonale comes with dusk-sensing headlamps and rain-sensing wipers. These lights also come with full LED bulbs. The Tonale is a safe SUV and was awarded Euro NCAP’s full five-star safety rating in 2022. Its adult occupant score is 83% and its child safety score is 83%. As part of its range of safety features, you’ll find an autonomous emergency braking system, a driver drowsiness system which alerts you when your driving begins to deviate as well as a forward collision warning. There is also intelligent adaptive cruise and speed control, a lane support system, a speed limiter and a traffic sign recognition system.
