Audi Q5 updates and facelifts

The Mk1 Q5 first launched in 2009, with a 2012 facelift adding new wraparound LED headlights and black gloss inserts around the air intakes. In 2017, the Mk2 was released, bringing new petrol hybrid engines to the range as well as new cabin technology for a safer and smarter drive.

The Q5’s size and crafted design means it closely rivals the BMW X3, Jaguar F-Pace and Volvo XC60. But with an exceptionally practical design, the Q5 is just as capable of cruising over long distances as it is hugging narrow roads, making it one of the best all-round models in its class.

Practicality and style of the car

The Q5’s practicality means everyone enjoys a spacious and comfortable cabin. It measures 4,682mm long, 1,893mm wide and 1,662mm high – closely mirroring the size of the BMW X3. It is also longer than the Mercedes-Benz GLC’s length of 4,656mm. Compared to the Mk1, the Mk2’s wheelbase of 2,819mm is 10mm longer than the first generation, offering extra legroom.

When it comes to boot space, the Audi Q5 doesn’t disappoint. While exact measurements vary by age and trim, most used Audi Q5s for sale will have between 500 and 610 litres of boot space with the rear seats up – more than the Volvo XC60’s 483 litres. With the rear seats folded down, there are around 1,550 litres of space which is plenty for a whole family’s bags and suitcases.

The Q5’s engine performance puts it at an advantage compared to its rivals, with its petrol, diesel and hybrid engines all offering excellent efficiency and range. Many used Q5s will come with a 2.0-litre petrol engine – the 45 TFSI. It generates 262bhp, 37.7–39.2mpg and accelerates from 0-62mph in 6.1 seconds. The 2.0-litre, 40 TDI diesel engine produces 201bhp, accelerates from 0-62mph in 5.3 seconds and achieves 41.5–44.8mpg.

Q5s manufactured after 2017 may come with a plug-in petrol hybrid engine. The 50 TFSI e plug-in is a 297bhp engine, featuring a 14.1kWh electric battery and a 2.0-litre, four-cylinder petrol engine. It has a combined quoted range of 156.9–188.3mpg and accelerates from 0-62mph in 6.1 seconds.

The 55 TFSI e plug-in pairs the same electric battery with a petrol engine and produces 365bhp. It has a quoted combined range of 166.2mpg and can do 0-62mph in 5.3 seconds. Both the 50 TFSI e and 55 TFSI e have an all-electric range of 39 miles – better than the BMW X3 xDrive30’s electric range of up to 34 miles. The Q5’s PHEV engines also have better mpg and electric range than the Jaguar F-Pace PHEV’s combined 130mpg and electric range of 33 miles.

Most used Q5s will feature Audi’s Tiptronic or S-Tronic transmission system. The Tiptronic system offers all the convenience of an automatic gearbox while allowing you to shift gears manually. When featured on a Q5, it often comes in the form of a six-speed transmission system. Other Q5s may feature the dual-clutch, direct-shift gearbox – the S-Tronic – which often comes as a seven-speed transmission system.
