The Audi Q8 is a luxury mid-size crossover SUV and is the brand’s flagship model. It was first released in 2018 and strikes a balance between top-tier practicality, desirable looks and class-leading performance.

The Audi Q8 is a five-door model and boasts a sloping roofline that gives it an instantly recognisable coupé body. With a distinctive front grille and bumpers, and silver trimming around the body, this model counts premium styling as one of its most appealing factors.

Audi Q8 updates and facelifts

First released in 2018, the Audi Q8 retains the space and practicality of the seven-seat Audi Q7, while adding new stylish touches to the exterior and interior. It was launched with three trims – S Line, Black Edition and Vorpsrung.

The Q8 received a mid-life facelift in 2023, adding a new front grille and deeper air intakes, Matrix LED headlights and laser light technology. The front and rear bumpers were lowered, and new apps were added to the Q8’s infotainment system. The plug-in hybrid engine initially available on the pre-facelift model was also phased out with this update, with only petrol and diesel engines retained. The trim levels have stayed the same, however, a limited-run Launch Edition trim has also been added.

Two performance versions of the Audi Q8 have also been released. The Audi SQ8 came to market in 2019, boasting a 500bhp, 4.0-litre V8 petrol engine. The RS Q8 was released in the same year and also comes with a 4.0-litre V8 petrol engine that produces 592bhp.

Practicality and style of the car

The Audi Q8 has a length of 4,986mm, a height of 1,705mm and a width of 1,995mm, making it 56mm longer than the Porsche Cayenne and 26mm longer than the BMW X6. It’s also 8mm and 5mm taller than both models.

This helps the Audi Q8 offer a good amount of cabin and boot space. It has 605 litres of space in the boot – more than the BMW X6’s 580 litres. The rear seats fold in a 40/20/40 split and can create 1,755 litres of space. This is also larger than the BMW X6’s 1,530 litres and Porsche Cayenne’s 1,708, making the Audi Q8’s boot one of the most practical ones in its class.

The Audi Q8 is an excellent towing model and has a maximum braked capacity of 3,500kg – more than enough for most medium and large trailers.

Running costs

The Audi Q8’s insurance groups range from 47 to 50, which is typical for luxury SUVs. The BMW X6’s range runs from 48 to 50, while the Porsche Cayenne’s runs from 44 to 50.

The Audi Q8’s powerful engines mean that it also qualifies for a maximum annual road tax of £570, which is the same as the BMW X6 and Porsche Cayenne.

How a used Audi Q8

The Audi Q8 is available with supercharged petrol and diesel engines, as well as a diesel mild hybrid and a regular petrol engine. All engines in this model come with Quattro all-wheel drive and are paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission.

In the petrol range, the entry-level engine is the 3.0-litre, V6 55 TFSI engine. It generates 335bhp, returns between 25.9 and 26.4mpg and accelerates from 0-62mph in 5.9 seconds.

There is also a 4.0-litre petrol V8 engine available in the Audi SQ8. It produces 500bhp, accelerates from 0-62mph in 4.1 seconds and returns between 22.1 and 22.4mpg.

The Audi RS Q8 is also available with a 4.0-litre, V8 petrol engine. This engine generates 592bhp and goes from 0-62mph in 3.8 seconds. It returns 21.2mpg.

The Audi Q8 is also available with a mild hybrid diesel engine – the 50 TDI. This engine produces 282bhp, returns 32.8mpg and goes from 0-62mph in 6.1 seconds.

The Q8 comes with an adaptive air suspension that has controlled dampening. It comes with three settings – comfort, sport and dynamic – each of which tweaks your model’s performance based on your driving terrain. While powerful, the engines available in the Audi Q8 are also relatively hushed, meaning the cabin remains a quiet and ambient environment to enjoy the ride.

Features you can expect in an Audi Q8

Interior

The Audi Q8 has a good amount of leg and knee room in all seats, while its sloping roofline makes the rear seats better suited for children and smaller journeys. Comfort in the front seats is no problem, with four-way lumbar support adjustment making it easy to stay comfortable on long drives.

The Q8 has a truly luxurious interior, with exceptional materials and smart technology making the cabin a luxurious environment. It also comes with handwriting functionality that lets you draw commands onto the screen for them to appear. These touchscreens also come with voice control.

You will also find Audi’s Virtual Instrument Cluster on a screen behind the wheel. This is a full-colour display that shows sat nav and readouts of your key drive information, including speed, distance driven, remaining fuel level and seatbelt warnings.

The Audi Q8’s cabin practicality means it’s easy to keep the interior tidy. It comes with narrow door bins and a lidded centre console container that is suitable for some small handheld items. There’s also a reasonably sized glovebox for items like sunglasses and maps.

Technology

You’ll find lots of handy driver assists in the Q8’s range of technology features. This includes Audi’s Pre-Sense Basic system, which closes the windows and tensions the seatbelts if it senses a collision is imminent. There’s also Pre-Sense Front that uses data collected from the car’s front sensors to apply the brakes if it detects you approaching a pedestrian or object and haven’t started braking.

You will also find adaptive cruise assist, which includes a combination of adaptive cruise control, traffic jam assist and active lane assist, using cameras and sensors to keep an eye on the car’s surroundings. This helps guide the vehicle on the optimum path, keeping it in lane as well as to a safe speed according to different driving conditions. The traffic jam assist takes over your braking and accelerating when driving in heavy traffic.

Safety

The Audi Q8 was awarded Euro NCAP’s maximum five-star safety rating, scoring a notable 93% for adult safety and 87% for child safety. It comes with front and side airbags, a belt pre-tensioner and load limiter as well as emergency braking that detects pedestrians and cyclists and is optimised for city and interurban driving.
