The arrival of the CUPRA Leon onto the hatchback market in 2020 marked the intentions of SEAT, to go premium. Since its launch, the CUPRA brand has been set apart as a more luxurious offering than its SEAT counterpart. The CUPRA Leon’s eye-catching design gives it serious kerb appeal. It has an interior packed with high-tech features cements its place in the premium marketplace. It is available as both a spacious, five-door hatchback and practical estate.

Upon its launch in 2020, the CUPRA Leon put itself firmly among the top competitors in the family hatchback market. Winning the Small & Compact Cars category at the 2021 Golden Steering Wheel awards, it has been widely praised for its handling and practicality. Along with it’s premium interior offering.

The CUPRA Leon comes in both petrol and hybrid form, adding impressive fuel economy to its long list of benefits. 1.5-litre and 2.0-litre options are available with a petrol engine, with power ranging between 150bhp and 300bhp. The 1.4-litre hybrid option also packs a punch, hitting 245bhp. Its estate version comes with two options: a 2.0-litre petrol engine which adds an extra 10bhp to its hatchback counterpart, and the same 1.4-litre hybrid.

CUPRA Leon updates and facelifts

The CUPRA Leon had its first facelift as part of the 2024 production run, with slimmed down headlights and a more aggressive front bumper.

Practicality and style of the car

The CUPRA Leon delivers a premium version of the original SEAT Leon. But in doing so, it doesn’t sacrifice practicality. It retains the generous interior space throughout the cabin, as well as a sizeable boot for a car in the compact hatchback market.

The petrol versions of the used CUPRA Leon offer the most boot space, which comes in at 380 litres with the rear seats still upright – five litres more than its rival, the 2023 Ford Focus. Packing in a combination of luggage and rear passengers is also possible thanks to the 60/40 split seating. Folding the seats down will increase capacity further. With 1,210 litres of space it beats rivals like the Vauxhall Corsa (1,118 litres), Dacia Sandero (1,108 litres) and SEAT counterpart, the Ibiza (1,165 litres). Due to the battery placement, the hybrid version has less boot space , offering 270 litres with the seats upright.

The estate version of the CUPRA Leon adds far more space, both for occupants and in the boot. The petrol version offers an impressive 620 litres of capacity with the rear seats still upright, while the hybrid version can hold 470 litres.

The spaciousness of the CUPRA Leon makes it a great car for packing in the family for a weekend away, and its ISOFIX seating ensures the installation of car seats is simple.

Running costs

The running costs of a used CUPRA Leon will depend on the power and engine size selected. Plus, there is some difference between the hatchback and estate version of the car.

The CUPRA Leon hatchback sits in insurance groups 25 to 31, while the estate is between 21 and 33. Road tax, meanwhile, starts as low as £170 per year thanks to the hybrid credentials of some options.

How a used CUPRA Leon drives

The used CUPRA Leon not only has ample power on its side, but crisp handling and well-tuned suspension, too. Its range of petrol and hybrid engine options offer varied levels of power. The hybrid versions, carrying a weighty battery, are a little heavier than their petrol counterparts, but they still pack a punch without impacting the enjoyment that drivers get from behind the wheel of a CUPRA.

Both the CUPRA Leon estate and the CUPRA Leon hatchback has the option of a six or seven-speed DSG automatic or a six-speed manual transmission. The manual option is quicker off the mark, while automatic transmission is dependable on long, motorway drives or powering down A-roads. That said, either option is ideal for urban driving, whether on a regular commute or the daily school run.

The entry-level engine for the used CUPRA Leon hatchback is a 1.5-litre, 150bhp petrol engine. A 2.0-litre petrol option is also available, increasing power to 190bhp. Two other 2.0-litre engines offer 245bhp and 300bhp, with 0-62mph maxing out for the latter at 5.7 seconds. They offer a fuel economy of 39.2mpg and 37.2mpg respectively.

The hybrid option for the hatchback is a 1.4-litre plug-in, which generates an impressive 245bhp. A battery range of 32 miles is a real boost to the economy credentials of the hybrid Leon, and it still carries itself well off the mark with a 0-62mph time of 6.7 seconds.

The estate CUPRA Leon comes with three engine options: a 2.0-litre petrol, 1.5-litre petrol and a 1.4-litre hybrid. The 2.0-litre petrol option can reach a range-topping 310bhp, hitting 0-62mph in 4.9 seconds. The 1.5-litre petrol option has a power output of 150bhp. The hybrid version, meanwhile, can produce 245bhp.

A generous number of storage pockets in the CUPRA Leon only adds to the uncluttered feel throughout. Trays in the centre console are supplemented by large pockets on all four doors, suitable for storing essentials for those longer road trips.
