For used Ford Mustang Mach-E cars, choose Arnold Clark

The Mustang Mach-E represents Ford’s first foray into the all-electric SUV market. Not to be confused with the iconic Mustang muscle car, this family-oriented model competes against the likes of the Volkswagen ID.4, the ŠKODA Enyaq and the Nissan Ariya. The range is divided into rear- and all-wheel drive variants, each of which offers a Standard or Extended range – with battery capacities of 70kWh and 91kWh respectively.

The Mustang Mach-E shares its namesake’s powerful aesthetic, boasting angled headlights and a curved bonnet. It is similarly badged only with a galloping horse and no Ford oval. Offering generous levels of equipment, it delivers an all-round connected and rewarding driving experience, all with no harmful emissions.

Arriving in UK showrooms in December 2020, the model quickly garnered several awards. From Top Gear’s Best Electric Crossover award to AAA’s Best Overall Car award, both in 2022, it has proved its abilities on both sides of the Atlantic. It’s available with two trim levels, the Select and Premium, which correspond to the 70kWh and 91kWh batteries.

Ford Mustang Mach-E updates and facelifts

The Ford Mustang Mach-E underwent some upgrades in 2022. These brought enhanced driver assistance technology and comfort features, as well as some minor styling revisions.

The Mach-E GT model also arrived in 2022 as a top-of-the-range option and provides exceptional performance. With its dual-motor all-wheel drive powertrain, it produces 480bhp and 860Nm of torque, propelling it from 0-62mph in just 3.7 seconds. As a challenger to the Tesla Model Y, with reaches 0-62mph in 6.6 seconds, it certainly stands out.

Practicality and style of the car

With a boot capacity of 402 litres, the Mach-E offers significantly more space than the Hyundai KONA Electric with its 332-litre boot and you’ll find an additional 81 litres of storage beneath the bonnet too. With the rear seats folded down, you’ll get an impressive 1,450 litres, considerably more than the Tesla Model 3’s 850 litres. The load space is square and flat, making it easy to slide in suitcases or other bulky items.

As part of the 2022 updates, the Mach-E was given even better towing capabilities. As a result, the 91kWh variant can tow up to 1,500kg of braked weight – that’s enough for a trailer or small to mid-size caravan.

Running costs

Running costs are always a consideration, and as an electric car, the Ford Mustang Mach-E is reasonable to recharge. It occupies groups 33–42 out of 50 for insurance, with only the high-powered GT variants sitting in group 47. You’ll pay similar premiums for the Nissan Ariya, which falls into groups 30–44. As an all-electric car, the model is exempt from road tax.

How a used Ford Mustang Mach-E drives

There are two powertrains available with the Ford Mustang Mach-E, each of which offer excellent performance and zero emissions. The 70kWh Standard Range battery pack comes with the Select trim and features an electric motor that produces 265bhp. Models with rear-wheel drive develop 430Nm of torque, getting you from 0-62mph in just 6.9 seconds. If you opt for the all-wheel drive, you’ll get 580Nm of torque and a 0-62mph time of 6.3 seconds. Both models have an electronically limited top speed of 111mph. A range of 273 and 249 miles is provided by rear-wheel drive and four-wheel drive variants respectively.

Choose the 91kWh Extended Range battery for more power. The rear-wheel drive version produces 290bhp and 430Nm of torque. This will get you from 0-62mph in 7.0 seconds. The all-wheel drive variant produces 346bhp and develops 580Nm of torque. This reduces the 0-62mph time to just 5.8 seconds. For the best range, choose the rear-wheel drive option, which provides 379 miles on a single charge; the all-wheel drive variant covers 336 miles.

If you’re looking for powerful performance, the Mustang Mach-E GT is the best option. It offers 480bhp and 860Nm of torque. This results in a 0-62mph time of only 3.7 seconds – quick enough to rival some supercars. You’ll still enjoy a good range too, as a single battery charge delivers up to 255 miles. Charging speeds vary according to your chosen battery pack. The Standard Range Mach-E can accommodate up to 115kW of DC. The Extended Range can be charged at 150kW.

Features you can expect to find in a Ford Mustang Mach-E

Interior

The Ford Mustang Mach-E has been built on a bespoke EV platform, meaning there’s generally more room for occupants than in a vehicle with a combustion engine. The flat floor enables passengers in the middle rear seat to enjoy good leg and foot space. All passengers – even those above six feet – benefit from ample headroom and knee room.

The Ford Mustang Mach-E has a premium feel inside, with a minimalist dash that’s dominated by a 15.5-inch portrait-style touchscreen. This is easy to navigate, with large graphics and a home screen that can be configured to your preferences. There’s also wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto functionality and integrated sat nav. Choose the Premium (Extended Range) trim and you will find a Bang & Olufsen ten-speaker stereo system that delivers crisp audio.

A combination of plastic, metal-effect accents and high-quality fabrics give the Mach-E’s interior a welcoming and comfortable feel. The rotary drive selector on the centre console is a useful touch, and the multi-function steering wheel enables you to control certain functions without taking your hands off the wheel.

The Mach-E’s custom EV platform makes for plenty of space to transport five, as well as offering plenty of storage room for your belongings. The door bins and glovebox are large and practical, and there are two cup holders under the dash.

Technology

Modern drivers expect a wide range of technologies to assist their drive, and the Ford Mustang Mach-E more than delivers. The LED headlights have an adaptive function (Premium trim), meaning they can move to illuminate the road better as you turn corners. In addition to this is adaptive cruise control, available as standard from 2021 models onwards. This maintains your selected speed as well as a preset distance from the vehicle in front and slows down or speeds up as appropriate. There are three driving modes to choose from too, with Active being the default. Whisper provides a more eco-focused drive and Untamed unleashes the swiftest performance.

When it comes to parking and manoeuvres, you’re assisted by both front and rear parking sensors and a 360-degree camera system. Passengers are catered for too, with four USB ports located throughout the cabin and dual-zone air conditioning keeping everyone at the perfect temperature.

Safety

The Ford Mustang Mach-E underwent a Euro NCAP safety test in 2021 and received a full five-star rating. It’s an exceptionally safe vehicle, offering a 92% adult occupant protection score and 86% for children. If you’ve got small children, they can be transported safely thanks to the inclusion of ISOFIX child seat mounting points in the outer rear seats.

In addition to front and side airbags, all variants have a plethora of active systems installed. These include automatic emergency braking, blind spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. This handy feature detects vehicles or objects that are approaching from the side as you’re reversing and alerts you to their presence.
