The Škoda Scala is positioned between its siblings, the Octavia and Karoq, providing ample space for drivers at a lower price point. This five-door family hatchback offers a satisfying driving experience and impressive storage capacity.

Škoda Scala updates and facelifts

Škoda introduced the Mk1 Scala in 2018 with three trims on offer: the S, SE and SE L. 2020 saw the introduction of the Monte Carlo trim and later that year, the SE Technology. The Mk1 offers three engine types to suit a wide variety of drivers. These include a 1.0-litre petrol engine, a 1.5-litre petrol engine and a 1.6-litre diesel engine.

The Mk2 was released in 2023 with three trims available: the SE, the SE Technology and the Monte Carlo. Four engines are on offer with the Mk2, including two 1.0-litre petrol engines, a 1.5-litre petrol engine and a 1.6-litre diesel engine.

The Škoda Scala won the 2019 Red Dot Design Award, beating competitors like the Mazda 3 and Ford Focus. The Scala also won Best Compact Family Car of the Year in Auto Express’s New Car Awards in 2019. With its smooth handling and competitive price, the Scala is a top contender in its class.

Practicality and style of the car

The Scala has an exceptional amount of boot space and outperforms many of its competitors. With a boot capacity of 467 litres with the seats up, increasing to 1,410 litres with the seats down, storage space will not be a problem. The Scala has far more room than the Volkswagen Golf’s 380-litre offering and the Kia Ceed’s 350-litre boot space.

Škoda has made this a car for storage, with the inclusion of an adjustable-height boot floor and flat-folding seats alongside a small boot lip – meaning loading goods is simple. Weekly shops and weekends away are easily catered for, as well as transporting larger items on longer journeys.

The Škoda Scala can tow a braked weight of up to 1,250kg, meaning towing small and medium-sized caravans and trailers is a breeze for the Scala. You won’t have to compromise on which of your equipment and belongings makes the cut on either your solo adventures or family getaways, as bikes can also be easily transported.

Running costs

The Scala sits in group 14 for insurance, meaning it has reasonable running costs over the long term, and it compares very well to its competitors. The Kia Ceed sits in groups of up to 20, while the Vauxhall Astra can reach up to group 22.

For 2019 models onwards, you can expect to pay a reasonable £180 for road tax annually for the Scala, which is a standard rate within its class. The Vauxhall Astra is taxed at the same amount.

How a used Škoda Scala drives

The ŠKoda Scala offers a wide variety of petrol and diesel engines across its two generations. The Mk2 iteration has the option of four engines, while used Škoda Scala cars pre-2023 (Mk1) offer three engine varieties.

The first engine on offer is the 1.0-litre petrol engine with 109bhp. It is a three-cylinder engine and delivers 200Nm of torque. You will find either a six-speed manual or a seven-speed DSG gearbox. The six-speed manual transmission has 52.2mpg, while the seven-speed transmission has 46.8mpg. The seven-speed DSG transmission takes the Scala from 0-62mph in 9.8 seconds, with a top speed of 125mph.

The second option is a 1.5-litre petrol engine, which delivers a great performance overall. With four cylinders, this engine produces 150Nm of torque and reaches 0-62mph in 8.2 seconds, with a top speed of 136mph. Like the former petrol option, you will find either a six-speed manual with 48.60-51.4mpg or a seven-speed DSG gearbox with 48.7mpg.

The only 1.6-litre diesel engine option produces 250Nm of torque and reaches 0-62mph in 10.1 seconds, with a top speed of 125mph. It has a six-speed manual gearbox with 58.9mpg or a seven-speed DSG transmission with 52.3mpg.

2023 brought four additional engine varieties. The first two are a pair of 1.0-litre turbocharged, three-cylinder petrol engines. The first produces 94bhp and reaches 62mph in 10.9 seconds. The second produces 108bhp and reaches 62mph slightly quicker in 9.8 seconds, with a top speed of 125mph. In addition, there is a 1.5-litre petrol engine, producing 148bhp with a top speed of 137mph. The 1.5-litre petrol engine is available with a five-speed manual gearbox, while the 1.0-litre petrol engines come with either a six-speed manual or seven-speed DSG automatic gearbox.

The final and only diesel option is a 1.6-litre engine that produces 114 bhp, achieving 0-62mph in 10.1 seconds. This is available with a manual or DSG gearbox.

Features you can expect in a Škoda Scala

Interior

Though Škoda has aimed for value for money with the Scala, the interior is still of very high quality. With clean and sophisticated upholstery throughout, alongside wipeable plastics, the Scala will stay in top condition..Its virtual cockpit display ensures maximum driver focus, providing details from your phone, sat nav and media outlets. The flagship trim, the SE L, also comes with a voice recognition system by Škoda that is well known for its easy operation. A large glove box and sunglasses holder in the front help to keep the cabin clutter-free.

The Scala’s space is more than sufficient, and while this car was designed to bridge the gap between the Octavia’s incredible space and the Karoq’s higher-end price tag, the Scala can still easily fit four adults and a child. Passengers are treated to copious amounts of leg and headroom, alongside personal storage solutions in the doors, as well as storage netting on the back of the front seats.

Technology

The Škoda Scala incorporates various technological features that ensure easy handling, safety and overall driving enjoyment. In some trims, the driver is treated to park assist with automatic bay and parallel parking, meaning even the most cautious of drivers can manoeuvre into tight city spots easily. Side assist with rear traffic alert detects vehicles moving towards the driver’s blind spot, and lane assist alerts drivers if they drift from their lane, helping to increase occupants’ safety on the road. Adaptive cruise control will be available in some variants, too, while all trims have front assist with city emergency brake and multi-collision brake.

Safety

The Scala’s generous number of technological features mean this car is one of the safest on the market, with a five-star rating (out of five) from Euro NCAP. It was awarded a safety score of 97% for adult occupants, 87% for child occupants, 81% for vulnerable road users and 76% for safety assistance. Two rear ISOFIX anchors on the outer seats are easy to locate and use, meaning your tiniest travellers are kept safe.

Its nine airbags reduce the effects of a potential accident, while its extensive safety equipment helps prevent accidents from happening and minimises the impact if they do. Autonomous emergency braking with front assist monitors the road’s conditions and traffic ahead to look out for potential hazards. While this feature ensures potential outside hazards are monitored, the driver fatigue sensor will also ensure the driver is fully alert when operating the vehicle, too.
