It was released with a choice between two engine sizes – a 1.0-litre and a 1.5-litre. A year later, Volkswagen added the 1.6-litre diesel variant. The T-Cross won Best Compact SUV at the Business Car Awards in 2019, as well as a host of other international awards like UOL Carros and L'Auto Preferita.

There is plenty of space in the back seat and the boot. The T-Cross enjoys the high-quality craftsmanship Volkswagen is famed for, with a subtle yet luxurious finish inside and out. In keeping with Volkswagen's modern lineup of cars, the T-Cross has a distinct style and sense of practicality.

Practicality and style of the car

Despite its small external form, the T-Cross is spacious inside. Thanks to the raised roof line, even the tallest passengers should fit comfortably. The rear bench seat has a 60/40 split for convenience and can be slid back to accommodate rear-seated adults comfortably. Slide it up to 140mm forwards to get an extra 70 litres of boot space, taking it from 385 to 455 litres, rivalling competitors like the Nissan Juke (422 litres) and SEAT Arona (400 litres). With both rear seats folded flat, you'll get access to all 1,281 litres the T-Cross has to offer; even more than the Ford Puma's impressive 1,216 litres.

Inside the VW T-Cross boot

The T-Cross is average in its class for towing capacity, able to pull between 1,000kg and 1,200kg –perfect for trailers and small caravans.

Running costs

Most versions of the T-Cross will fall between insurance groups 9 and 10, with only the top-spec R-Line trim reaching group 17 (out of 50). The T-Cross returns between 43 and 54 MPG depending on your engine choice meaning the T-Cross remains an impressively economical car within its class. Prices start as low as £20 per year for road tax and can go up to £180 for some of the higher-end trims.

How a used Volkswagen T-Cross drives

When the T-Cross was released in 2019, it came with a choice of two petrol engines. There are two choices for power output from the 1.0-litre petrol engine. The first produces 94bhp, managing 0-62mph in 11.5 seconds with a five-speed manual transmission as standard, and has a top speed of 112mph. It returns around 47.2–49.3mpg and produces 112g/km of CO2.

The slightly more powerful 114bhp 1.0-litre petrol engine gets from 0-62mph in 11.3 seconds. With six speeds in the manual gearbox, this version can reach a top speed of 120mph. It returns around 45.6–47.1mpg and produces 111g/km of CO2.

For more power, consider the 1.5-litre petrol engine. Producing 147bhp, this variant comes with seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission as standard. This engine will get from 0-62mph in 8.5 seconds and reaches 124mph.

Though it has since been discontinued, you may still find a used Volkswagen T-Cross with a 1.6-litre diesel engine offering 94bhp. This version reaches 62mph in 11.9 seconds and has a top speed of 112mph, returning a reported 52.7–54.3mph and producing 110g/km of CO2.

Features you can expect in a Volkswagen T-Cross

Interior

VW T-Cross front interior seats, dashboard, centre console, infotainment screen and steering wheel

The cabin of a Volkswagen T-Cross is designed to be subtle yet functional. Volkswagen veterans will find the interior familiar, as the dashboard shares many similarities with the Polo. Thanks to the raised ride height and seating position of the T-Cross, the driver has more visibility. Optional colour inserts mean the interior can have a punch of personality while not compromising the composed feel the T-Cross otherwise achieves.

Technology

All trims come with an eight-inch touchscreen infotainment display as standard, and the controls are thoughtfully laid out for convenient, safe and intuitive use. Trims above the SE enjoy a 10.3-inch display in place of analogue dials, giving a high-tech feel to the cabin. Bluetooth, DAB radio, two USB ports and air conditioning come as standard across all trims.

There is a tray on top of the dash perfect for smaller items, while a large cubbyhole near the gear lever has plenty of space for cables, smartphones and more, with more storage in the central armrest. The door bins are roomy, too.

SEL and R-Line trims come with sat nav as standard, which is an optional extra in the SE trim. All but the entry-level S trim get access to Android Auto and Apple CarPlay for smartphone functionality, and all versions have access to the optional "Winter Pack" which adds heated front seats.

Safety

The Volkswagen T-Cross is impressively safe, scoring a full five stars on the Euro NCAP safety test. It achieved 97% for adult-occupancy safety, and 86% for child-occupancy safety. There are plenty of airbags in the T-Cross, with front driver and passenger airbags, front and rear curtain airbags, and side airbags throughout. The emergency braking system helps you avoid and mitigate collisions. ISOFIX mounts are present in the back seats so you can easily attach child seats.
