Blue BMW XM from the front sitting side on

Unveiled in 2022 and introduced to showrooms worldwide in spring 2023, the BMW XM is the German brand’s first ever electrified high-performance car. With a plug-in hybrid system, a striking design and a progressive interior, it’s a five-seat SUV that effortlessly turns heads and delivers breathtaking yet eco-conscious performance. It’s the first M-exclusive product since the original M1 was discontinued in 1981. It features the trademark M quad exhaust system as well as BMW’s characteristic kidney grilles, which incorporate lighting inside.

As a luxury large SUV, the XM rivals models such as the Porsche Cayenne, Audi Q8 e-tron and Land Rover Range Rover Sport. It initially came in XM and XM Label variants, but a range-topping XM Label Red arrived in August 2023. In terms of size, the model sits between the X5 and X7, making it perfect for growing families and those who require plenty of space. Equipped with a four-wheel drive system, it can also handle the challenges of rough surfaces.

BMW XM updates and facelifts

Still in its first generation, the BMW XM has not undergone any significant updates since its launch in 2023.

Practicality and style of the car

Blue BMW XM from the side

At 5.1 metres in length, the BMW XM is similarly sized to the Tesla Model X, but comes exclusively as a five-seater. It has a boot capacity of 527 litres, which is more than enough to accommodate a pushchair, a set of golf clubs or several suitcases. If you need more space, the rear seats split 40/20/40 and fold down, giving you the flexibility to carry large or awkwardly-shaped items. In total, the XM offers up to 1,820 litres. This is significantly more room than is available in the Land Rover Range Rover Sport, which has a maximum capacity of 1,492 litres.

The BMW XM makes a competent tow car thanks to a maximum braked capacity of 2,700kg. That’s plenty for hauling a trailer, caravan or even a horsebox.

Running costs

As a premium SUV, the BMW XM occupies group 50 out of 50 for insurance, aligning its running costs with competitors such as the Tesla Model X and hybrid variants of the Porsche Cayenne. As the price tag for a new XM is over £40,000 the road tax is £560 for the first five years of renewal. Thereafter its plug-in hybrid powertrain means you’ll pay £170 per year. This is comparable with other luxury SUVs such as the Porsche Cayenne and Land Rover Range Rover Sport.

How a used BMW XM drives

The BMW XM is a large SUV, weighing in at over 2,700kg. As such, it needs plenty of power to deliver the high-performance driving experience that M enthusiasts expect. Under the bonnet is a 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 petrol engine, which is supported by an electric motor that provides up to 192bhp. A total output of 644bhp and 800Nm is at your disposal, 450Nm of which is available from a standstill. That’s enough to deliver an impressive 0–62mph time of 4.3 seconds and a top speed of 168mph.

For short-distance journeys and trips around town, the XM can run on pure electric power. The 25.7kWh battery supplies up to 55 miles of zero-emissions motoring at speeds of up to 87mph. The onboard Combined Charging Unit – a smart control system that includes charging and drive electronics – of the M Hybrid system supports AC charging at a rate of up to 7.4kW. You can recharge the XM’s battery from zero to 100% in just over four hours.

The XM’s engine comes with an eight-speed automatic transmission. It also has a four-wheel drive setup, which has an adjustable amount of rear bias. This enables you to tailor your drive according to whether you want sportier performance or greater stability.

Features you can expect in a BMW XM

Interior

Blue BMW XM's interior front seats showing badging

The BMW XM offers a blend of sportiness and luxury inside, with high-quality materials such as leather and carbon fibre providing the premium feel you’d expect from a car with the M badge. The sports seats offer plenty of support and comfort, and most functions are controlled by the dual-screen interface, which incorporates the instrument cluster and infotainment system. There are plenty of distinctive M touches too, including an M steering wheel, an M gear selector and M-specific graphics on the driver's display. There’s even a contoured roof panel that changes colour according to the driving mode you select.

Thanks to the car’s long, tall profile, head and legroom are more than generous in both compartments. Despite the sloping roofline, adults can be easily accommodated in the rear, and plentiful shoulder room means three can sit side by side. You’ll also find lots of storage cubbies, which enable you to keep the cabin tidy. Door bins and a cubby under the central armrest provide ample stowage up front, and the cup holders can be heated or cooled to keep drinks at the perfect temperature. The front seat backs feature aeroplane-style openings for tablets or other items, and rear passengers have cup holders and USB-C ports to charge their devices on the go.

Technology

The XM’s functions are largely controlled by a 14.9-inch infotainment display, which is twinned with a 12.3-inch instrument panel to create one sweepingly curved setup. It creates a minimalist feel and can be controlled via touch or using the rotary controller. The iDrive 8 operating system supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, enabling you to mirror your smartphone display and access apps such as Google Maps or Amazon Music.

The M front sports seats are electrically adjustable, and feature a memory function. This enables you to find your perfect driving position and revert to it at the touch of a button should somebody else drive your car. Additional tech features include a wireless phone charging tray, a head-up display with augmented reality navigation and four-zone climate control, which allows all occupants to travel at their preferred temperature.

Safety

The BMW XM is fitted with a raft of safety features to keep occupants and pedestrians protected out on the road. Standard passive features include multiple airbags, as well as ISOFIX child seat anchor points on the outer rear seats. There are also active systems such as front collision warning, which detects objects in the vehicle’s path and prompts you to apply the brakes. Should you fail to do so in time, the car automatically brakes to prevent or reduce the severity of an impact.

In addition to this is lane departure warning with lane return assistance, which helps to keep you centred in your lane on the motorway. You’ll also benefit from evasion assist, which helps you to steer around unexpected obstacles, and alertness assist, which monitors for signs of tiredness and advises you to take a break when necessary.

Selected used XM models may have the driver assistance pack added, which includes adaptive cruise control, steering and lane control assistance, and emergency lane change and stop warning.
