Mercedes-Benz C-Class updates and facelifts

Black Mercedes-Benz C-Class AMG-Line from the front

The first-generation W202 Mercedes-Benz C-Class was launched in 1993 and has been a flagship model for the German brand ever since. With five successful generations released, W203, W204, W205 and W206, the C-Class is regularly the brand’s top seller.

The model was given a facelift in 2011, with the biggest changes being the cars aesthetics and the introduction of start/stop technology which was developed to improve efficiency. In 2015, it won the prestigious “World Car of the Year Award” at New York’s International Auto Show for challenging the best in class on driving experience, road handling, luxury, and safety. The C-Class had another facelift released in 2019 which debuted at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show with the saloon and estate versions. This facelift is available with four-cylinder turbocharged petrol or diesel engines, both with improved performance and lower emissions.

A variety of different trim levels are available. The AMG range of trims are for drivers looking for high power and increased performance. AMG stands for ‘Aufrecht, Melcher and Großaspach’ and is named after the German engineers who modified Mercedes-Benz cars and engines for racing and motorsports. Mercedes-AMG cars offer high-performance engines for a premium driving experience.

Practicality and style of the car

Black Mercedes-Benz C-Class AMG-Line from the side

The C-Class comes as a four-door saloon, five-door estate, two-door convertible, and two-door coupé. It is a sophisticated and stylish compact executive car which sits in segment C as its class. The C-Class offers the driver a luxury driving experience with exceptional road handling and performance. There are: petrol, diesel, PHEV, MHEV, and fully electric options to choose from, all delivering good fuel economy. Whether you are looking for something sporty, sleek, spacious, or sensible, the C-Class has something for everyone.

The C-Class is a satisfying car to drive, offering quiet and comfort in the cabin. Depending on the body type you choose, front and rear cabin space can vary. There is plenty of room for a 6-foot-tall driver across all body types. The saloon and estate have five seats as standard; the coupé and convertible both have four seats.

The C-Class saloon offers 455 litres of boot space. The coupé offers 400 litres of boot space with the exception of the C63 and C63s which have a smaller 355 litre boot. Less boot space in the coupé is due to the vehicle’s sloping roofline. Those looking for more room can opt for the estate version which offers 490 litres of boot space with the rear seats up and 1,500 litres with the rear bench flat, this is 10 litres more than a BMW 3 Series Touring and 80 litres more than an Audi A4 Estate. The boot space of the PHEV version is slightly smaller due to the battery taking up more of the floor area and provides 360 litres in total.

Running costs

Body type, engine size, transmission and fuelling type all impact running costs of a used Mercedes C Class. For saloon models, insurance groups range from 23 to 50. Coupé models tend to range between groups 31 to 50 and C-Class estate insurance groups usually vary between 24 to 50. CO2 emissions on a C-Class range from around 12g/km to 258g/km. Road tax can range from £0 - £570 per annum, costing the same as the BMW 3 Series. Maintenance and repair costs can be kept to a minimum providing the vehicle is regularly serviced and well-maintained.
