Silver Mercedes-Benz EQA from the front sitting side on

The Mercedes-Benz EQA first arrived in the UK in early 2021 following its motor show debut in 2020. It’s the German brand’s most compact all-electric SUV and offers a stylish, practical option for SUV buyers wanting to cut their carbon footprint. Much of the engineering know-how and interior design is shared with the Mercedes-Benz GLA, but rather than petrol or diesel engines, the EQA offers several different electric power outputs with a choice of front- or all-wheel drive.

Unique design touches include a distinctive ‘Black Panel’ radiator grille with a central star and full-length light bars that run the full width of the front and rear ends of the car.

A zero-emissions rival to other premium compact crossovers, a used EQA makes a great alternative to the BMW iX3 and Tesla Model Y. It should also be easier to park than most of its rivals – at just 4,463mm long, the five-seater EQA is 270mm more compact than a BMW iX3.

Mercedes-Benz EQA updates and facelifts

The EQA 250 was updated to EQA 250+ specification in 2022. This increased driving range from a maximum of 266 miles to 324 miles thanks to a larger 70.5kWh battery.

Mercedes-Benz announced that an updated EQA will arrive in Europe in early 2024. This facelift includes subtle exterior changes, an upgraded infotainment system and a driving range increased to a maximum of 350 miles on the official test cycle.

Practicality and style of the car

An electrically powered tailgate is standard across the EQA range, and with the rear seats in place the EQA offers 340 litres of boot space. An additional under-floor storage area is ideal for storing the EQA’s charge cable. Generous storage can be found in the door bins and pockets in the back of the front seats, further increasing the model’s practicality.

If you need more space, folding the rear seats forwards almost quadruples the amount of luggage room to 1320 litres. The 40/20/40 split for the rear seat adds to this practicality, allowing owners to adjust passenger room and luggage space as needed.

The towing capacity of the EQA differs according to which power setup up it has. The EQA 250 has a towing capacity of 750kg whether the trailer has brakes or not. This matches the BMW iX3. EQA 300 4Matic and EQA 350 4 Matic models offer the same 750kg for unbraked trailers but can tow up to 1800kg if the trailer is fitted with brakes.

Running costs

The Mercedes-Benz EQA is rated in insurance groups 37 to 45 out of 50. This means all models cost less to insure than the Tesla Model Y, which sits in group 50. EQA 300 4Matic and EQA 350 4Matic variants compare favourably with the BMW iX3, with the iX3 sitting in groups 44 to 45 and the Mercedes-Benz EQA variants sitting in groups 42 to 45. The entry-level EQA 250 is the most reasonable to insure, with its group 37 to 39 rating.

As with all pure electric vehicles, road tax is free of charge. You will also be exempt from Congestion and ULEZ charges when driving in cities.

How a used Mercedes-Benz EQA drives

The Mercedes-Benz EQA is available with three power outputs referred to as 250, 300 and 350. The EQA 250 is a front-wheel drive model with 190bhp and a 66.5kWh battery that offers up to 266 miles of range. This model was upgraded to the EQA 250+ in 2022, adding a 70.5kWh battery and an increased driving range of 324 miles. It’s the biggest battery and longest range in the EQA line-up. The range is also greater than the BMW iX3’s 285-mile range and comparable to the Audi Q4 e-tron’s 302–309 miles.

All other EQA models are four-wheel drive, as denoted by 4Matic at the end of their names. Both the EQA 300 4Matic and EQA 350 4Matic have 66.5kWh batteries and up to 268 miles of range. Power outputs are different, however, with the 300 4Matic producing 228bhp and the EQA 350 4Matic a greater output of 292bhp.

Mercedes-Benz’s Eco Assist system helps maximise mileage across the range. It does this by checking navigation and traffic sign information to automatically judge the appropriate levels of brake regeneration. This uses the electric motors to create a braking force, which in turn charges the battery.

A home charging point rated at 7.4kW provides a full charge in around 11 hours, falling to five fours with an 11kW charger. Mercedes-Benz quotes around 30 minutes to charge from 10–80% on a rapid DC public charger offering 100kW.

Features you can expect in a Mercedes-Benz EQA

Mercedes-Benz EQA interior rear seats

The interior of the EQA offers a mix of BMW build quality, cutting-edge technology and useful practicality. There’s plenty of space for occupants in the front seats, thanks to generous head and legroom. The rear seats provide enough space for three adults to sit comfortably next to each other. With an entirely flat floor in the rear, even the middle passenger will have plenty of legroom.

The interior of the Mercedes-Benz EQA is equipped with a leather upholstered, multi-functional steering wheel. There is also 64-colour ambient lighting and heated front seats as standard. Stereo options include the standard nine-speaker Mercedes-Benz system or a Burmester surround-sound system on top-of-the-range trims.

The MBUX infotainment system is most striking of all. Standing for Mercedes-Benz User Experience, it features twin ten-inch screens that stretch halfway across the dashboard. The displays can be configured by the driver and feature three themes – Classic, Sport and Progressive – all with their own unique look and feel.

To control the system, owners can choose to use the touchscreen, operate touch-sensitive buttons on the multi-function steering wheel, use voice commands on the ‘Hey Mercedes’ digital assistant, or use the trackpad located between the front seats on the centre console.

The Mercedes-Benz EQA features several driver-assistance features as standard equipment. Active lane keeping steering stops the driver drifting from their lane while active speed limit assistant prevents the EQA from exceeding the speed limit.

Blind spot assist identifies cars approaching in the EQA’s blind spots and flashes up an orange warning in the side mirror. Exit warning function plays a similar role when the car is stopped, by warning of approaching traffic if an occupant tries to open a door.

LED headlights with automatic high-beam assist provide excellent illumination at night. They also reduce driver workload by automatically dipping from high beam when they sense oncoming traffic.

Other standard technology on the EQA includes electrically folding mirrors, while the driver’s wing- mirror and rear-view mirror automatically dim, reducing any glare from other car’s headlights.

The Mercedes-Benz EQA has scored a maximum five-star Euro NCAP safety rating, with 97% for adult occupants and 90% for child occupants. The model is fitted out with front, head and side airbags to protect front occupants, along with side head airbags in the rear and two ISOFIX child-seat anchor points to safely secure child seats.

The EQA comes with other safety technologies such as electronic stability control and auto emergency braking. In a worst-case scenario, active brake assist automatically activates braking to prevent an accident with another vehicle, pedestrian, or cyclist.
