For used Lexus Ux cars, choose Arnold Clark

Lexus has been a pioneer in hybrid technology for over a decade, with its first hybrid model – the RX – going on sale in 2005. The Lexus UX was launched into an extremely competitive market in 2018. A premium compact SUV with a hybrid powertrain, it offered a more eco-friendly option for motorists requiring SUV practicality. At launch, there were three grades available: UX, F Sport and Takumi. In 2020, a Premium Sport trim was added to the lineup.

Lexus UX updates and facelifts

The Lexus UX was named J.D. Power’s Best Small Premium SUV of 2019, beating prestigious rivals such as the Mercedes-Benz GLA, Audi Q2 and BMW X2.

Built on the same platform as the Toyota Corolla and C-HR models, the Lexus UX is known for its outstanding reliability record. It boasts striking styling, a high-quality interior and an array of technology, making it appealing to young families, urban motorists and company car drivers. It also offers good fuel economy around town, keeping running costs low for those who primarily drive in urban settings.

The UX was given a mid-life facelift for the 2023 model year. The electric edition received a 40% increase on battery life, making the range a more competitive 280 miles. All models also benefitted from an improved infotainment system which offered a choice of eight or 12-inch touchscreens and ‘Hey Lexus’ voice control. The F Sport Design trim was also added to the range, delivering an upgraded Lexus Safety System+ and a two-tone paint option.

Practicality and style of the car

The Lexus UX has a generously sized boot that accommodates your day-to-day luggage needs. Whether you’re bringing home the grocery shop, loading up a pram or going away for the week, there’s room to meet your requirements. Unusually, it’s the all-electric UX 300e with the largest boot. It boasts a capacity of 486 litres with all seats in place, beating the Volvo XC40 Electric’s 452 litres. Choose a front-wheel drive hybrid model and you get 438 litres, which is more than the Audi Q2’s 405 litres. The all-wheel drive variants offer 401 litres.

All iterations have 60/40 folding rear seats, with the front and four-wheel drive hybrids providing a total capacity of 1,231 and 1,194 litres respectively. As a tow car, the UX supports up to 750kg of both braked and unbraked weight.

Running costs

Running costs for the Lexus UX are lower than those of many of its rivals. Most variants occupy groups 22-23 out of 50 for insurance, with only Takumi trims sitting in group 26. In comparison, BMW X2 and Volvo XC40 variants fall largely into groups 22-32. Choose a Lexus UX 300e and most iterations occupy group 38, with the Takumi in group 42.

Hybrid versions of the UX are charged at £170 per year for road tax. However, those that have an original list price of over £40,000 incur a £390 surcharge for the first five years of tax renewal. This puts the annual fee at £560, after which it drops to the standard £170 per year. UX 300e editions are exempt from road tax.

How a used Lexus UX drives

There are just two powertrain options available with the Lexus UX: the UX 250h hybrid and the UX 300e electric. The hybrid teams a 2.0-litre petrol engine with an electric motor to deliver a combined output of 181bhp and 190Nm of torque. This enables the front-wheel drive variant to reach 62mph from a standstill in 8.5 seconds, or the four-wheel drive version to achieve the same in 8.7 seconds.

Both have automatic CVT transmission, which provides smooth gear changes. The front-wheel drive offers a combined fuel economy of up to 53.3mpg, while the four-wheel drive returns 47.1mpg on the combined cycle.

Choose a UX 300e from 2021-2023 and you’ll get a 54.3kWh battery pack that powers a 201bhp electric motor. Developing 300Nm of torque, it can take you from 0–62mph in 7.5 seconds. It also offers a range of up to 196 miles. From late 2023 onwards, a bigger 72.8kWh battery pack is fitted to the UX 300e.

This produces the same amount of power and torque and achieves the same 0–62mph time, but delivers a more competitive range of up to 279 miles. Charging from a 7.4kW home wallbox takes less than 12 hours for variants with a 72.8kW battery or eight hours for those with a 54.3kW battery.

Features you can expect in a Lexus UX

Interior

Step inside the Lexus UX and the first thing you’ll notice is the quality. Everything is well-constructed, and the materials are both plush and durable, making them well-suited to family life. The front seats are spacious, with ample head and legroom for both the driver and passenger. In the rear, low-set seats mean that despite the sweeping roofline, taller adults can be comfortably accommodated. The back is best suited to children and young teens. Parents can easily get preschoolers secured into their car seats thanks to wide-opening doors and ISOFIX mounting points.

There are lots of useful storage spaces in the cabin, from the glovebox and deep door pockets to the pair of cup holders behind the gear lever. The armrest also has a cubby, which is equipped with two USB ports so you can attach a smartphone or other device while charging it.

The interior of the Lexus UX can be customised by the original buyer, meaning there’s an array of finishes and colours available on the used market. Upholstery comes in leather, fabric, or a combination of the two, as well as colours ranging from black to Flare Red.

Technology

Choose a used UX pre-2023 facelift and the infotainment system features a 7-inch touchscreen as standard or a 10.3-inch display on the Takumi trim. You can also operate the system via a touchpad on the centre console. Vehicles produced after the facelift have an 8 or 12-inch touchscreen.

DAB radio, Bluetooth and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto all come as standard, with the latter enabling you to access smartphone apps on the go. Satellite navigation also comes on all variants. Upgrading to Takumi trim swaps the 6-speaker stereo for a 13-speaker Mark Levinson sound system, delivering a high-quality audio experience.

Convenience features include keyless start and a rear-view camera, which provides improved visibility as you’re reversing, parking and manoeuvring. Step up to the F Sport trim for electrically adjustable front seats, which make finding the perfect seating position even more convenient.

Safety

In its 2019 Euro NCAP test, the UX was awarded a maximum five stars, with scores of 96% and 85% for adult and child occupant protection.

Every trim comes with the brand’s Safety System+ package, which includes a pre-collision System with pedestrian detection. This detects vehicles and pedestrians ahead and warns you to brake. If you fail to do so, the brakes are applied automatically. There’s also lane-keeping assist and adaptive cruise control to keep you centred and maintain your speed on the motorway.
