The T-Roc was first launched in 2017 and is Volkswagen’s fourth SUV to date. It’s often referred to as the SUV equivalent of the VW Golf. Volkswagen first introduced the T-Roc as a concept in 2014 at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show.

The T-Roc is a subcompact crossover SUV which falls into class segment B, with selected models offering an all-wheel drive drivetrain. From 2018, the T-Roc range expanded, introducing the R-Line trim level which offered sportier body styling and additional equipment and technology to the interior. 2019 saw the introduction of the T-Roc’s most powerful trim – the R. The VW T-Roc R achieves 296 bhp from the same engine as the Golf R, delivering the same high performance and superior road handling.

A facelift on the T-Roc occurred in 2022, with the upgrades including a newly designed dashboard and refreshed infotainment system. The exterior got updated front and rear bumpers, revised LED headlights, and darker taillights with dynamic indicators. The 2022 facelift also offered new paint finish options and a refreshed alloy wheel design. The ever-expanding SUV car market is competitive with the Volkswagen T-Roc up against the Audi Q2, Ford Puma and Peugeot 2008, amongst others.

The T-Roc is also available in a convertible version. The T-Roc Cabriolet was launched in Germany in 2020 with the open-top version expanding the range of the popular crossover car. It is one of the only convertible subcompact crossover SUVs on the market. The convertible concept was first shown to the public in 2016 but wasn’t available to buy in the UK until 2021. Practicality and style of the car

The T-Roc sits below the VW Tiguan and above the slightly smaller VW T-Cross. Although classed as a small SUV, there’s room for five adults and a decent-sized boot too. The cabin offers plenty of room for growing families or groups of friends, with a 6-foot-tall passenger able to sit behind a 6-foot-tall driver comfortably in the rear. Ample leg, shoulder and head room is provided for passengers in the cabin. A selection of practical storage bins, cubbies, consoles and cupholders also ensure your cabin is kept clutter-free.

The T-Roc has 445 litres of boot space which increases to 1,237 litres with the rear bench folded, providing more space than others in class including a Nissan QashQai or Toyota C-HR. The rear bench folds in a 60/40 split which allows the seats to sit almost completely flat when stowed away. A level loading lip also helps when packing heavy loads into the T-Roc’s boot. AWD models come with a 392-litre capacity boot; this is due to the AWD setup taking up more space at the rear of the car. AWD models’ boot space increases to 1,237 litres with the rear seats folded. The T-Roc Cabriolet offers less boot space than models with AWD; 280 litres of room are available due to the drop-top setup.

The maximum tow capacity depends on the engine size. Larger engines offer the full towing capacity of up to 1,700kg. For example, the 2020 Volkswagen T-Roc 140TSI Sport 2.0-litre has a maximum tow capacity of 1,700kg. Whereas the 2022 110TSI Style 1.4-litre can tow a maximum of 1,500kg.


Running costs

Insuring your T-Roc will vary depending on trim-level, engine size, body, fuel, transmission type and other personal and circumstantial factors. Models manufactured from 2017 onwards sit between insurance groups 10 to 34. Those looking to keep their insurance costs low could opt for the T-Roc S 1.6 TDI which sits in insurance group 10. Road tax is another cost that will vary depending on which T-Roc you choose. A used Volkswagen T-Roc will fall between road tax bands G and J, with yearly prices of around £180.

How a used Volkswagen T-Roc drives

A variety of turbocharged petrol and diesel engines are offered. The smallest engine in the T-Roc range is a 1.0-litre petrol engine, with 1.5-litre and 2.0-litre petrol engines also available. When it comes to diesel, the T-Roc is available in a 1.6-litre or 2.0 litre TDI.

All petrol engines come with a 6-speed manual transmission apart from the 2.0-litre TSI, which as a 7-speed direct-shift gearbox (DSG) transmission. 2.0-litre petrol versions come with 4Motion AWD as standard. The 1.6-litre diesel engine from the range has a 6-speed manual transmission. The 2.0-litre TDI engine has a 7-speed DSG transmission.

Entry level models like the 1.0-litre TSI deliver around 108 bhp, going from 0-60 mph in 10.5 seconds and achieving 44.8 – 48.7 mpg when driving efficiently. The T-Roc Cabriolet achieves between 108 and 147 bhp, going from 0-60 mph in 9.3 – 11.9 seconds and delivering up to 45.6 mpg depending on the trim level you choose. The range-topping T-Roc R will deliver an impressive 296-300 bhp with 400Nm of torque through a seven-speed automatic gearbox which achieves 0-60 mph in 4.5 seconds.

A stylish and sophisticated cockpit boasts a variety of technology and equipment. The multifunctional 8-inch colour touchscreen enhances in-car entertainment and communications for an extremely satisfying onboard experience. The infotainment system provides the driver with Bluetooth, telephone and audio connectivity for compatible devices. There is also an in-car shop, USB connectivity, DAB digital radio, and music playback from MP3, WMA and AAC files. Selected models offer preloaded European navigation data. The SEL trims and above provide the Digital Cockpit Pro system which includes a 10.3-inch high-resolution, Thin Film Transistor (TFT) screen with customisable menus and information. All these features work together to enhance driver satisfaction and convenience in the cabin.

SEL trims and above have a ‘Driving Profile Selection’ which allow the driver to tailor the driving mode to their needs. There is a choice of four pre-set modes: ‘Eco’, ‘Normal’, ‘Sport’ and ‘Individual’. ‘Individual’ mode allows the driver to manually set steering, driving and climate controls in the cabin. Selected used T-Rocs also offer Volkswagen’s 4MOTION AWD system. This system was designed by the manufacturer to give superior road handling in all weather and on all road surfaces. The system sends engine power to the front and rear axles, rather than just one. This enhances traction in slippery conditions.


Safety

A suite of advanced safety features is available to assist the driver on every journey. Features include front assist alerts with radar sensor-controlled distance monitoring system, a city emergency braking system, and Predictive Pedestrian Protection. All features aid in mitigating collisions ahead of time. Power-assisted and speed-sensitive steering help to keep the driver in control whilst enhancing road handling. Automatic dimming interior rear-view mirrors, climate control, and a heated rear window all come as standard with a VW T-Roc. There are ISOFIX child-seat anchoring points in the back too.

Volkswagen also offer their ‘We Connect’ service. This provides the driver with a range of different vehicle safety and emergency services. ‘We Connect’ services include automatic accident notifications, vehicle health reports, driving data, service schedule notifications, an emergency ‘eCall’ service for SOS calls, and more. The T-Roc is equipped with six airbags to form a curtain airbag system. There are front and side airbags for the front passenger and driver and two curtain airbags at the rear of the vehicle. In 2017, the T-Roc was given a 5-star safety rating from Euro NCAP, scoring 96% on adult safety and 87% for child safety.
