The Škoda Karoq is a family-sized SUV combining space, comfort and performance. The model was first launched in 2017 as a replacement for the popular Yeti. While certainly a later competitor in the SUV class, a used Škoda Karoq strikes a great balance between matching the needs of family-sized SUVs while offering a great combination of engine configuration and versatility.

Škoda Karoq updates and facelifts

Although launched relatively recently, the Karoq rolls the experience of the Yeti into a new model while seeking out new ground when it comes to design, tech and specs. The model received a facelift in 2022, which saw the addition of new diesel or petrol engines and technology. This helped keep the model fresh and competitive with its key rivals, notably the SEAT Ateca and Nissan Qashqai.

2022 also marked the year the Karoq won gold in the Auto Express Used Car Awards. Judges said that the Karoq really delivers, and has something for everyone: quality, practicality, value, low running costs and plenty of driving satisfaction.

Thanks to its distinctive design and smooth, premium interior cabin aesthetic, the Karoq looks great inside and out. The style and practicality of this model has helped it quickly become a major contender in the family SUV class.

Practicality and style of the car

As the successor to the Škoda Yeti, the Karoq borrows many of the key features of its predecessor, while tweaking performance and space. The result is that the Karoq is a very practical vehicle, offers an excellent amount of storage space and is a good option for long journeys.

Inside the cabin, there is very little engine noise. And when combined with its space and comfort, the Karoq’s interior is certainly a welcoming haven for occupants.

The Karoq is significantly larger than the Yeti, so there is a lot more room for passengers and drivers to take advantage of. Measuring in at 4,382mm long, 2,025mm wide and 1,603mm tall, the Karoq is only narrowly larger than the SEAT Ateca, which is 4,381mm long, 2,078mm wide and 1,615mm tall – which just goes to show how effectively the Karoq’s design squeezes every last drop of space for maximum cabin comfort.

The Karoq seats five adults comfortably, with a good amount of leg and headroom across the front and rear seats. Certain Karoq trims, like the SE L, also feature VarioFlex seats as standard. This ingenious system boasts three evenly split seatbacks instead of your usual 60/40 split, for maximum flexibility when you have passengers in the back and need to carry long loads. The rear seats also recline and slide back independently of each other, freeing up more space.

Depending on generation and trim of a used Karoq, there is often around 521 litres of boot space. With the seats up, a Karoq can carry up to nine carry-on suitcases, whereas an Ateca only manages eight with its 510-litre boot and a Qashqai just seven as it only offers 479 litres of boot space. Fold down the rear seat and drivers can create a total 1,630 litres (or 1,810 litres with the VarioFlex seats removed).

Living up to its family SUV credentials, the Karoq has three ISOFIX points in the back, so you can transport your little ones with ease.

If you’re planning on towing a trailer or caravan, the Karoq is ideal for this task too. Thanks to its range of engines, the Karoq offers a maximum braked towing capacity of between 1,500kg and 1,900kg.

Running costs

The Karoq also offers drivers a good degree of insurance group flexibility too, so you can pick a trim that best suits your budget and performance needs. Karoqs occupy insurance groups between 10 and 23, with base trims sitting at the lower end and sportier trims at the upper. Road tax for the Škoda Karoq is £180 annually across all the trims, so it won’t break the bank in this area either.

How a used Škoda Karoq drives

One distinct advantage the Škoda Karoq has sought to eke out over its competitors is engine variety and performance. The Karoq comes with a wide range of petrol or diesel engines, with a variety of transmission options to further adjust performance as needed.

When it comes to petrol engines, one of the most common entry-level units is the 1.0-litre engine which produces 115bhp, and can accelerate from 0-62mph in around 11 seconds, while achieving between 45.6 and 47.9mpg.

The 1.5-litre engine offers 150bhp and 51.4 and 52.3mpg. It can also accelerate to 62mph in 8.9 seconds. The most powerful petrol engine is the 2.0-litre, 190bhp variant which gets from 0-62mph in 7 seconds and still delivers 40.9mpg.

As a diesel option, two of the most common engines are the 115bhp and 150bhp units. These engines have better fuel economy, making them better value if you cover long distances.

Depending on which engine and trim Karoq drivers opt for, different transmission options and gearboxes can help push performance further. Many entry-level Karoqs are paired with a five or six-speed manual transmission, a six-speed or eight-speed automatic or a six or seven-speed DSG, dual clutch auto gearbox. The eight-speed automatic is found in certain recent generations and higher-level trims.

Features you can expect in a Škoda Karoq

The exterior design of the Karoq is largely minimal, with a sports-inspired front grille, bumper and headlights all giving the car a distinctive aesthetic. Much of this style is similar to the Yeti, but the Karoq also has its own appeal, especially with the flagship trim levels.

Interior

Inside, the Karoq has an exceptionally clean, well-organised and premium interior. Surfaces have a glossy finish and where there are buttons and dials, they are made with soft-touch materials for a luxury feel. The Karoq’s minimalist interior includes all the functionality you could need.

Technology

The Mk1 base model is well equipped, coming with a 6.5-inch touchscreen. The next trim up increases the touchscreen size to 8 inches, while a 9.2-inch touchscreen can be found in the Mk1’s range-topping trim. On post-2022 facelift models, you will find an 8-inch touchscreen which is home to the infotainment system and can be used to control music, air conditioning and maps.

The instrument cluster has also been digitalised on post-2022 models, with all trims coming with either an 8-inch or 10.25-inch display, as can be found in the top-of the range Sport Line trim. You can choose from a variety of layout options – from navigation and speed to the fuel level and connectivity. Technology has also been incorporated into the multi-purpose steering wheel which has a handful of buttons for controlling key functions. These buttons are carefully placed, benefiting the driver.

Safety

Finally, safety is an integral part of any family SUV, and Škoda has ensured that a used Karoq meets expectations. Safety features that come as standard include an autonomous emergency braking system. Euro NCAP has awarded the Karoq a full five-star safety rating, with a 97% adult occupant rating and 79% child occupant rating. By opting for certain trims, drivers can also incorporate traffic sign recognition, lane assist and blind spot monitoring into their Karoq.
