progression levels

Explore the route to becoming a Product Consultant

Level 1

We expect you to gain product knowledge of several car models at your branch and work your way through a progression framework, and after 3 months you will be eligible to progress to become a level 2 Genius.

What’s included in level 1 and how will you be measured?

  • A focus on product knowledge and YCP skills in both enquiry and handover videos.
  • Regular reviews by the Sales Development team, ensuring you are progressing through your agreed progression criteria.
  • Management reviews of attendance, timekeeping and willingness to work by Branch Management team.
  • You will have opportunities to be placed in the Genius 100 Club as an additional incentive to your role.

Level 2

We will expect you to work mostly on core activities including test drives, handovers and customer videos, as well as having the desire to progress to become a Product Consultant.

What’s included in level 2 and how will you be measured?

  • Show interest in progressing to become a Product Consultant
  • Continued skill development of YCP videos
  • Following agreed criteria to complete test drive paperwork on behalf of the branch
  • Attend Sales Academy to learn about finance and add-on products.
  • You will start your Product Consultant training and be given opportunities at branch to showcase your newly learned skills.
  • You will complete and pass all exams and go on to perform all aspects of the Product Consultant role.
  • Your progress will be reviewed by your Branch Management team and you will become a fully-fledged Product Consultant.

Stewart Gunn

From Product Genius to BYD General Manager, Stewart Gunn has achieved great things in just seven years at Arnold Clark.

Starting as a Product Genius at Paisley Fiat in 2016, Stewart then moved to our Glasgow Innovation Centre as an Innovation Centre Genius in October 2020. From there, he was offered his first managerial position in May 2022 to become the Innovation Centre Manager in Stafford, and in March 2023, he was promoted to General Manager at our new Linwood BYD branch.

With BYD continuing to expand as a global brand, Stewart is looking forward to working with the manufacturer and being part of their growth in Scotland and the rest of the UK.

Stewart said: ‘What excites me with this particular branch is that we are solely run by product geniuses, so we have an extra strong focus on product knowledge and customer service. During my time as a product genius, I learned a lot, and passing that onto the team here at Linwood has been a rewarding experience.’
