The e-tron series initially launched in 2009, when the first concept car – the R8 e-tron – was unveiled. It was another ten years before the first fully-electric vehicle, simply named the Audi e-tron, appeared in showrooms. A luxury SUV that sits between the Q5 and Q7 in terms of size, it offers a prestigious and eco-conscious solution to families and those with an active lifestyle.

The e-tron rivals the Tesla Model X, Jaguar I-Pace and Mercedes-Benz EQC. With five-seat practicality and a generous boot, it offers plenty of space for your everyday needs. It’s also equipped with an array of technology to ensure a comfortable and connected drive. It was launched with three drivetrain options, but the swiftest e-tron S was later dropped, leaving just the entry-level ‘50’ and the higher-powered ‘55’.

Audi e-tron updates and facelifts

The first fully electric Mk1 launched in 2019, with the e-tron Sportback introduced in 2020. The Sportback is a coupé-inspired model, featuring sleeker looks and a sportier drive. It was offered in a smaller trim range than the regular SUV, which comes in Technik, Sport, S Line, Vorsprung and Vorsprung S variants. There was also a separate Launch Edition variant with its own specifications.

In 2023 the e-tron was updated and given a new name: the Q8 e-tron. Chief among the updates was a set of larger batteries with improved range. The trim structure was also revised, with just four trims made available.

Practicality and style of the car

The Audi e-tron sits between the Q5 and Q7 in terms of size and interior space. The front offers plenty of head and legroom, and the rear has enough shoulder space for three adults to sit abreast. Thanks to the car’s almost flat floor, all three rear passengers get ample foot space too. If you’re travelling with infants or toddlers, the ISOFIX anchor points in the outer rear seats mean you can secure their child seats safely.

When it comes to practicality, the Audi e-tron offers an impressive 615-litre boot. That’s plenty to accommodate everyday luggage needs such as groceries and sports equipment, as well as suitcases. It’s also larger than the cargo volume provided by the Jaguar I-Pace (557 litres) and Mercedes-Benz EQC (500 litres). The rear seats also split 40/20/40 and fold down to create a total 1,725-litre luggage capacity. There’s also a wide opening and no load lip, making it easy to slide heavy or bulky items in.

The e-tron has a maximum braked towing weight of 1,800kg. This is equal to that of the Mercedes-Benz EQC and higher than the capacity offered by the Jaguar I-Pace.

Running costs

Despite its premium nature, the Audi e-tron has lower insurance premiums than its key rivals. It occupies groups 43-50 out of 50, offering lower running cost options than both the Mercedes-Benz EQC and Tesla Model X, which both sit in group 50. As an all-electric model, it is exempt from road tax.

How a used Audi e-tron drives

The Audi e-tron is available with two powertrain options. The entry-level 50 has a 64kWh battery with an output of 308bhp and 540Nm of torque. As such, it can reach 62mph from a standstill in 6.8 seconds. It also offers a 197-mile range, which is plenty for everyday needs and the occasional long journeys.

The higher-powered 55 has an 86kWh battery, which produces a maximum of 408bhp when the drive selector is in Sport mode. This can take you from 0-62mph in just 5.7 seconds. In other driving modes the output dips to 355bhp, which can still get you from 0-62mph in 6.6 seconds. The 55 offers a driving range of 254 miles. Both the 50 and 55 are equipped with Audi’s Quattro four-wheel drive system for optimal traction and stability in varying road conditions.

Charging the Audi e-tron with a 7kW home wallbox takes approximately 10 hours (68kWh battery) or 14 hours (86kWh battery). At a 150kW public charging point, you can charge either variant from 20-80% in just 30 minutes.

Features you can expect in an Audi e-tron

Interior

The e-tron is built with quality in mind, the interior is precisely fitted and there are plenty of soft-touch surfaces and fine materials. Trim finishes include metal, wood and a carbon-fibre look, depending on the preferences of the original buyer. You can also set the mood for each journey with LED ambient lighting, which comes in a range of hues.

The cockpit has a minimalist feel, with two screens dominating the centre console. The top one is a 10.1-inch display that provides access to audio, navigation and telephony functions, as well as vehicle settings. The bottom one is 8.6 inches and operates the air conditioning system. Both have sharp graphics and quick responses for ease of use.

Technology

One of the most useful technologies offered by the Audi e-tron is the preconditioning system. This enables you to turn on the vehicle and set the climate control via your smartphone. As such, it can be ready to go at the perfect temperature before you even get inside. Choosing the Vorsprung trim extends this functionality, allowing you to switch on heated seats and window de-icers as well.

Convenience features include cruise control, which automatically maintains a set speed on the motorway. There’s also a powered tailgate, which is useful when you need to load heavy items into the boot and your hands are full.

Safety

The e-tron was tested by Euro NCAP in 2019 and received a full five stars. Adult occupant protection was scored at 91%, with an 85% score for child occupant protection. With its battery built into the central structure of the vehicle, it is considered very safe. In addition to this, the e-tron comes with a host of airbags, stability control and automatic emergency braking. There’s also a lane departure warning, which helps you to stay on course if it detects you drifting from your lane.

The Launch Edition variant also offers cross-traffic alert, which prevents you from reversing into the path of oncoming traffic, and adaptive cruise control, which enables you to remain a preset distance from the vehicle in front.

Audi e-tron Technik

The entry-level Technik trim comes with an array of features. These include air suspension for a comfy ride, leather upholstery, heated front seats, dual-zone climate control and LED ambient lighting. Infotainment is controlled by a 10.1-inch screen and includes DAB radio, sat nav and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto. You’ll also get wireless phone charging. Convenience features include cruise control, keyless go and a powered tailgate. Keeping you safe are lane departure warning and automatic emergency braking.

Audi e-tron Sport

Sport trim builds on Technik with 19-inch alloy wheels, front sports seats with cloth upholstery three-zone climate control. There are also USB sockets in the rear of the vehicle and rear parking sensors.

Audi e-tron Vorsprung

This trim offers 21-inch matt grey alloy wheels, adaptive dampers and a panoramic glass sunroof. Technology features include an augmented reality head-up display, a 360-degree camera, blind spot monitoring and adaptive cruise control.

Audi e-tron Launch Edition

The Launch Edition replaces the car’s wing mirrors with cameras and adds electric seating adjustment. There’s also a panoramic roof and the front seats have a memory function.
