What our customers say
For used Volkswagen Golf cars, choose Arnold Clark
Arnold Clark offers the best used Volkswagen Golf deals, guaranteed. And if you find a better used VW Golf price elsewhere, we’ll give you back double the difference.
If you’re in the market for a used VW Golf, then you already know that the Golf is an impressive car and a piece of motoring heritage, especially in the UK where it has been on the road for almost four decades. Some will remember the classic Golf and the subsequent facelifts that it has had over the years, but even with all of the modernisations and updates, the Golf’s DNA has remained the same as it has always been.
The Golf has seen a success, not only on the road but also on the track, and it has a rich history with its flagship performance models carrying a motoring legacy. All of this is great for motorists young and old, as no matter what you want out of your Golf, be it a city runabout, a weekend car, something for the family, the thrill of a performance car or all of the above, the Golf really has something for everyone with its various models.
The VW Golf history
The Golf was first launched in 1974 by German manufacturer Volkswagen and has since become one of the most popular hatchbacks on UK roads. The Golf’s look hasn’t changed too drastically over time, for good reason – instead choosing to stick with refinement – meaning there are no generations of the Golf that feel particularly dated. After almost 40 years of production, it’s easy to understand why a used Golf remains one of the most popular second-hand cars in the UK today.
The Volkswagen Golf is the best-selling car in Europe and each of Golf’s eight generations have finished in the top two of the European Car Awards, even winning World Car of the Year in 2009.
Volkswagen Golf engines and economy
The Golf’s fuel economy and emissions are very competitive with CO2 emissions of just 100g/km from the most efficient 1.6 diesel version currently available, which is also tax exempt due to its low emissions; it also boasts an average of 70 mpg (miles per gallon). On top of that, there is a plug-in hybrid Golf GTE and a fully electric e-Golf if you fancy going even greener.
Entry level engine choices for the VW Golf include a 1.0 litre TSI petrol and 1.6 litre TDI diesel engine. Both offer excellent usability, fuel economy and over 60 mpg is regularly achievable.
In the middle of the range, there’s a 1.5 litre TSI EVO petrol engine and a 2.0 litre TDI diesel engine.
The VW Golf isn’t just for families, there are plenty of performance options for car enthusiasts, with the Golf R being the most powerful of the range.

What are the VW Golf trim levels?
Choosing a trim level is a hard task when searching for that perfect used Golf that covers all of your requirements. Whether you are looking at the entry-level Golf for its affordability or you are after the top-of-the-range model that offers plenty of performance, the Golf has these options and everything in between. There are a large number of Golf trims available here at Arnold Clark – so you’re sure to find something that suits your needs.:
Golf S
The Golf S is the entry trim level and is fitted with 15-inch steel wheels, the VW Composition Media System, which provides the driver with access to their cars audio stereo DAB and music files from their phone, USB, SD and AUX IN. The S has electric front windows, air conditioning and electric and heated door mirrors. If you have a young family, the S also come with ISOFIX child seat anchor points as standard.
Golf Match
The Match is the next trim level above the S and, for a relatively small increase in price, VW provides a whole host of additional features that make the Match fantastic value. Unlike the standard S, the Match comes equipped with alloy wheels and automatic lights and wipers. Match drivers can enjoy features such as cruise control and front and rear parking sensors, something you would typically expect on a higher trim level. As with the S, the Match media system connects to your devices through USB or Bluetooth, provides standard digital radio and a trip computer. Available as a 1.6 or and 2-litre diesel engine or a 1.4 turbo petrol, the Match has a variety of fuel-efficient options.
Golf GT
The Golf GT is arguably a slimmed down version of the extremely popular flagship GTI. It is fitted with the same lowered suspension you would expect from the GTI, so retains the exciting driving experience and visual appearance of the GTI. However, this is where the similarities end. The GT is a far more sensible option and, as it has far fewer sport-tuned modifications than the GTI, also has a much lower insurance category and is far more efficient. In terms of features, the Golf GT enjoys 17-inch Dijon alloy wheels and is fitted with sport seats in the front. Volkswagen’s Discover sat nav system is an upgrade on the Composition Media System and provides access to the multi-function computer. With heated and electric door mirrors, electric windows, ABS, ESP and a pollen-filtering air conditioning – the GT really is packed with functionality!
Golf R-Line
Volkswagen ‘R-Line’ trims feature the aesthetics of the ‘R’ trim but without the performance elements, providing the driver with all the curb appeal and gadgets from the performance trim but a less powerful engine. This places this trim a level above the GT. The body kit of the R-Line, although modelled after the R, is a unique body kit. The R-Line is also fitted with a spoiler and twin exhaust as standard, as well as sport seats and an infotainment system with Bluetooth connectivity, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay and DAB radio. There are two engine options with the R-Line: a turbo charged 1.5 litre petrol that generates 128 or 148bhp. The second option is available as an automatic and is a mild hybrid to assist with fuel consumption. The R-Line also comes with adaptive cruise control, lane assist and autonomous emergency breaking.
Golf GTI Performance
The GTI Performance is the trim above the previous generation of GTIs. The main difference, apart from the facelift, is that the performance has had its power increased from 227bhp to 242bhp all from the same 2-litre engine. For those really wanting the highest-powered version, VW did release a limited edition Clubsport and Clubsport S version that provided 261bhp and above.
Golf FTI TCR
The TCR is another GTI variant that is a nod to the race version ‘Touring Car Racing’. The TCR builds upon the performance with further ‘race’ features, with an even more powerful engine, 18-inch alloy wheels and electronic locking ‘eDiff’ as standard, while stiffened and shortened suspension make the TCR 5mm lower and that much closer to the road. On launch, the TCR came with two upgrade options, the first has adaptive dampers and large 19-inch alloy wheels, whereas the second option comes with Michelin Pilot Cup 2 tyres, the same found on the Clubsport S. For those looking to take the car to the track will be interested to know that the 155mph speed limiter that is found on most German cars has been removed to provide the full touring car experience.
e-Golf
The e-Golf is VW’s all-electric version of the Golf. There are a number of subtle differences visually, but these are in line with most electric cars that include the covered grille (there is no radiator to cool after all) and ‘spokeless’ alloy wheels, both of which help electric cars reduce drag and improve efficiency. The e-Golf is VW’s entry to compete with BMW’s i3 and Nissan’s Leaf. Features-wise, the e-Golf comes with the standard SE specification but also gets a 9.2-inch touchscreen infosystem that provides access to the climate control, sat nav and multimedia system that has all the features you’d expect. It is also fitted with 360-degree parking sensors. As for the range, arguably one of the most important features of any EV, the e-Golf (on paper) reaches 135 miles on the motorway in cold weather and 280 miles if you’re driving in mild weather in the city.
The most popular style of Golf is the hatchback body, but there’s also an estate Golf available for those who need the extra space.
When it comes to hatchbacks, the Golf faces plenty of competition from other manufacturers, including the Vauxhall Astra, Ford Focus and Honda Civic. More premium rivals include the Mercedes A-Class, BMW 1 Series and Audi A3.
